Managing your employees. How hard it is for you? What have you done to solve it?

In a recent meeting with other business owners about our employees, many were talking about how unmotivated their staff is or how hard it is to get things done as we want them. I was curious to know about your experiences.

Momma's Recipe Business

Hello everybody!

Today i had an experience that led me to a business idea:

Since i'm a student 200Km away from my hometown, my mother packed me some canned food she made. Today i felt like i should eat something from home. I opened a jar witch contained a mix of vegetables cuted and prepared into large pieces. I wasn't very enthusiastic when i first saw the food since i'm not a veg guy. But when i tasted them...oh god...i wished i could give you a sample to see for yourself. It was really amazing. I ate the whole jar and then a thought poped in my mind: "hey, wait a second. If i like it so much it is impossible there are no others that will love this product!". Then i realized that there are no other products like this on the market. Next minute i called my mother and asked her about the recipe. She started to describe the process with every detail.

So now i'm thinking which should be the next step. In which direction should i develop this business plan. I'm thinking about an online store. I'm thinking about samples. I'm thinking about branding ( homemade-BIO brand i think is the right one). I think about advertising. I think about the production place and process. I think about patenting.A lot of thigns are flying in my head now and i want to know how to settle them down . I'm asking you how do you see this business in a the best way?

Advertising in "Book of Lists"

After having had my business open a full year, I've decided to start paying for some more serious advertising, including a web ad in a local weekly magazine. When I contacted the media person about this, they also suggested I advertise in the "Book of Lists", which is an annual publication that lists important local businesses in the area. The media contact said "The Book Of Lists is a business resource used by businesses in our community to find services. It is not geared toward job seekers or sales researchers. It is an “evergreen” publication because it is used all year."

The cost to advertise in the Book of Lists for a full year would be $500. So it's a considerable amount of money, but if it would generate a lot of business, it would be worth it to me. The thing is, when I search for "book of lists" and try to find info on how helpful this is for advertising a business, I don't get many results and mostly see ad type sites that encourage businesses to get on the book of lists, but not a lot of discussion among individuals about how beneficial this kind of advertising is.

Does anyone have any insight on this or experience with this?

Thanks.
