The rediculous saga of trying to delete my AOL account

So for about 3 months off and on I've been trying to delete my AOL account in my continuing effort to clean up my digital life.
It's a free account and I haven't used it in about 10+ years. I just don't want the open account out there with my name on it.

I should be able to just delete it, right?

Nope.

The website gives you every option to adjust your account, short of deleting it. You can change it, upgrade it, downgrade it, transfer it, even take over the account of a recently deceased person...but no working option to simply leave and delete your information. The option doesn't work.
I only figured out it doesn't work because I went through the steps a few months ago, and logged in 2 months later and was able to log in. Account still intact.

So I reach out on Twitter. AOL support sends me to the website. I take a screenshot showing them that there is no option. That the confirm deletion button or action is gone.

They tell me to call support.

Got around to it today. Support tries to send me to the website. I explain all over again and ask them to please just delete the account,.

They tell me they can't do it on their end, but if I could wait another couple of weeks when the website is redone/fixed than I can do it online.

I ask for a supervisor and was disconnected. I call back and start all over again.
The second customer support agent opened a ticket, and escalated it and someone is supposed to get back to me.
Seriously? Just to delete my account?

This seems illegal to me. Seems like I should be able to remove my information from their company freely. That they shouldn't be able to hold my information hostage. Again, this has been a 3 month saga. I'm not having a knee jerk reaction because I got bad service today.

The time and resources that both they and I have spent to do something that should be simple and that users 100% should be in control of is ridiculous.
Not sure what OATH ( Verizon company that owns AOL now) is doing, but this is unacceptable.

Anyone else have a similar problem trying to leave a service or delete an account?

Google changed meta description length from 160 to 320 characters

In case you haven't heard Google changed the length of the meta description (that little snippet of info that appears in search results below your page title) from 160 to 320 characters. If you're using an SEO plug in, most have already adjusted for the change, but have we?

I've gotten so use to the 160 character limit that they thought if changing my descriptions is kind of exciting but scary. I mean was it broke? Do I need to fix it?

Yoast wrote a good post about the pros and cons of changing your page descriptions. It's worth a read:

Quote:

For this research project, we picked 100 of the most visited pages on our site. Before we made any changes we did a baseline measurement, by gathering data from our Google Search Console account. We wanted to know how high these pages ranked before we changed the meta description with Yoast SEO, in order to compare it to the rankings afterwards.

PERCENTAGE SPLIT IN A HUSBAND AND WIFE PARTNERSHIP - NON ltd Co

Hi, I am a newbie to this web site and sorry if I have messed things up. My wife and I have a BnB and wondered if we can have a partnership changed to 99% in her name and 1% in my name as she has no other income.

Last year it was 50/50 and did not matter as we made no profit. But this year I have already used up my allowance but my wife has her full personal allowance as she has no other income.

I appreciate any help, Regards, Trev.

Where to find funding for Kickstarter videogame?

Finally got a Chromebook. Initial thoughts.

I've been thinking about a Chromebook for a while now. I wanted something that was lighter, quicker, and the price is right on them.

First the problems:

  • I work primarily on a Windows Desktop to do web design and support services. I also have a windows laptop, but increasingly I need to do stuff in Linux. My Windows Desktop doesn't do well with certain versions of Linux because there's no support for my graphics card, and for a lot of work I'll need to be mobile.
  • I have a windows laptop that dual boots Linux, but when I'm mobile I have to go back and forth between Windows and Linux because all my business emails were running through Outlook. It's also not the thinnest or the lightest. So a new laptop was in order.
  • Been using MS office for years, but I always thought it was more complicated than it had to be and I only use Outlook and Word.
  • I have android phones for both personal and my work lines. MS Office apps are better, but other things like Contacts and Google calendar work better than MS options. Outlook's mobile app is still cumbersome to me and a bitch to set up a lot of emails addresses one at a time.
  • To sum it up, I was split between two worlds of Google and Microsoft software and devices and neither provided a full solution for the different kinds of work I needed to do and for business and personal separation.

So a while back I started using G-Suite, and I like it. Easy to separate business and work. Everything syncs with my phones, and Google docs are good enough.

A few of my concerns were answered:

  • If I could dual boot or boot from a USB stick since it makes no sense to buy another laptop that I couldn't also run Linux on. I was contemplating buying a new laptop and just running Linux on it, but that doesn't make sense since I don't run my business on Linux. Plus thin and light windows machines are $800+. Turns out on the Chromebook I can run both Linux and Chrome OS on it.
  • I do use a couple of things on my Windows machines that I can't do without. Adobe Acrobat, GIMP, and my VPN's. Turns out there are Chrome extensions for all of them.

  • Specs on many affordable Chromebooks are Celeron processor, 2G-4G RAM, 11-13" screens. Reviewers say that's enough for web based applications, but I couldn't deal with that. I wanted something that could last a couple of years. But I didn't want to pay $900+ for one of the nicer Google or Samsung models with better specs. Found this https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/conten...ebook14forwork, and got an open box special on the i5, 8G RAM version. Nice machine. Very happy with the quality of it.

Just booted it up for the first time today and the first thing to mention is none of that lengthy MS new computer "We're putting a few things together for you.." stuff. You just sign into your Google account and that's it. Ready to start returning emails and editing docs. You could literally take a Chromebook out of the box, turn it on, sign in and start working immediately. Very nice.

Is it for everyone? Absolutely not. If you ARE already using Google products, especially Google for work, it may be something to look at.

Will update as I use it more. So far so good.

Forum upgrade happening this weekend

I will be upgrading to the newest version of the forum software this weekend.

The newer version will allow us to have some of the features that people have asked about, has some security upgrades, updated admin and user controls, and provide a better user experience across all devices. I tested it on my phone and it looks pretty good.

Everything will work as before, nothing will get lost and all of your profile info will remain the same.

I will update this thread with the exact day and time frame shortly.

eCommerce Reality

Hello Small-Business-Forum eCommerce Vets,

Like all noobs to eCommerce, I am drooling with the prospect of sitting at home on the sofa in my boxers collecting bundles of passive income. Though, I know the age-old expression "If it is too good to be true..." probably applies. With that said, what is reality ... can I make a family-sustaining amount money in a 5-year range, is the eMarket too dynamic to have a stable business, is the real money starting a site and selling it quickly? I need a
dose of eReality, please?

Thank you,

Data

Social Media Scheduling

Hey all. I'm trying to set up a schedule for posting on social media. I'm starting with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, but even limited to those three it seems a daunting task. I'd like to have a system so I don't have to think too hard. Something like, marketing on Mondays, photography on Fridays, something funny on Sundays, etc.

Anyone organize their social media content this way? Any advice? Not every post needs to market my business, so long as my twitter feed isn't a ghost town.

[Important] User permissions

Based on Owen's suggestion I've made some changes to user permissions.

1. New Members- Under 5 posts. No custom title, or signature permissions.
2. Registered Members - 5 or more posts. Can create custom titles, and full signature permissions including one image preferably company logo.
Important: No advertising banners, affiliate banners, cat pictures, and so on. This is a business forum, not a gaming forum.

I think it's important to allow members to tell who they are, and what they do.
a. It helps new users or those just starting out know the industry and expertise of the person who is responding to their questions.
b. Helps users get to know each other should people want to network or do business with each other outside of the forum.

Of course the main concern is spam and overt self promotion so I will keep an eye out for abuse, but will handle any instances on a case by case basis as long as I can keep up with it.

I will add the rules concerning sigs and titles to the forum rules.

Let me know if you have any questions or further suggestions on this.
Thanks

Removal of our Name as a business

You show Artiestuff in Dayton Ohio as a business. We are not a business. It is my husband and myself selling our personal items. We have accumulated a lot of items over 44 years and know that our time for downsizing is coming soon. We don't welcome the public calling us to sell us business items. We do not deal with people in person. Please remove us from your business profile wherever we are. Thank you Art and Sharon Wilson. Thank you

Which type of device do you use MOST to run your business?

Just wondering what members here use most to run and keep up with their businesses.

I do most of my day to day work on a gaming desktop that I've turned into a 3 monitor work station.
I have a dual boot Windows/Linux laptop but I mostly use that for training and classwork.
I have an android tablet that I use for books and catching up on industry news and articles.
I use my XBOX or Fire Stick for keeping up with my various You Tube channels and podcasts
I use mobile phones and virtual numbers exclusively. I don't have a land line.

It may seem like a lot, but they all serve a purpose and make life a little easier by not having to do everything from one device, one place, or during certain times.

I did just order a Chromebook to have something portable for any meetings or location work, so I'm really excited to see how it works for me.

What about you guys?

New Business Idea

Hello,

A group of us have come up with a new business idea and we were hoping for some feedback on the idea. Our idea is a jacket that allows you to change the temperature as the weather changes throughout the day. An example of this would be if it is cooler in the morning the jacket could be set to a warmer temperature, while if it is warmer later in the day the jacket can be adjusted to a cooler temperature. This jacket will help to eliminate the need for multiple jackets.

Thank You

General advice for getting into the car wash and laundromat businesses

I've been thinking about getting into the car wash and/or laundromat businesses for a long time , which is why I'm interested in reading any sort of general advice about this topic out there .

Has anyone here ever run a car wash or laundromat ? What was it like ? Were these endeavors worth the effort overall or not ?

Also are there any worthwhile books or articles about this topic out there that anyone would like to recommend ?

30 Day Security Challenge Video Series

30 Day Security Challenge by Shannon Morse ,host and producer at technology and security network Hak5, is a step by step on how to get control over your online privacy and security. It focuses on helping you clean up all the crap you have out there, knowing how to secure yourself both online and securing your devices.

It's 30 easy to understand videos, each about 2-3 minutes long. Each are documented with links to any of the mostly free and open source tools recommended.

I did it the first time in 30 days, but it's video...you can go at any pace you want.
I thought it would be helpful for anyone who wants to get their tech/privacy/security house in order and doesn't know where to start.

Free and Open Source Tools and Software

Starting a business is expensive. Many people don't account for the cost of all the tools and software needed to run a daily operation or how easy it is to get nickle and dimed to death every month, $10 and $20 at a time.

I'm compiling a list of some of my favorite free or open source tools that I use or have used over the years that have worked just fine and saved me money over purchasing or subscribing to more expensive options.

Practicing Good Forum Security

When you're online it's a careful balance between your work or business which you want to be online and found, while keeping your personal information as protected and secure as possible. Being a business forum, we're part of a demographic that gets spammed and solicited relentlessly.

I have a few tips for some basic forum security. I will add to them as needed or as things change. Feel free to chime in on this thread with a few tips of your own.

  1. Use your business or public email. In case of any security issues, the only thing at risk is information that you've already made public.
  2. Use a different password here than you do anywhere else which uses the same email.
  3. Don't use your business email for personal activities.
  4. When possible you should strive to have a business/private email address on your own domain. If you must use a free email address, Gmail is the most secure option.
  5. Report any suspicious behavior, solicitation, or spam on the forum.
  6. If you are unsure of a link, or file run it through Virus Total first to see if it triggers any known malware warnings: https://www.virustotal.com/#/home/upload
  7. When doing business with forum members, do the same due diligence that would you any other time.
  8. Try not to divulge too much personal information about yourself or your family on the forum.
  9. Don't link to personal social media accounts from your business profiles or websites.
  10. Do not upload company documents to the forum.

About forum Advertising

We all understand that running any site is an expense and ads help pay the bills. I'm also well aware of possible security issues that malicious actors are using against ads these days, and will always use verified and trusted ad networks such as Google, and Nativo .

When there are direct advertisers I will provide information about who any new advertisers are, with information about their company so that you know who are running the ads on this forum. If I cannot verify the company with contact information, I will not allow them to buy advertising on the forum.

I will also create some updated terms or service to inform you about how your information is being used and protected on the forum. More to come.

facebook announces new privacy policies and settings

Many of us use Facebook for both business and personal reasons and I'm sure many are as upset as I am over the lack of care they've exhibited over who can and cannot access our info, and how easy it was to exploit that.

A few days ago Zuck announced new policies for advertisers, but for us there's finally a way to delete your data, and they're redesigning the settings to make things easier to find. It was clear for a long time that the settings were not user friendly on purpose to make things hard to find. It appears that game is over.

Still not feeling all warm and fuzzy about Facebook, but at least they're doing something and are doing it quickly.
More here.

Forum Security Best Practices

It's tricky being both public online as a business, and trying to keep yourself safe from bad guys. As a small business forum we are susceptible to spammers and other unscrupulous actors trolling for access to this target market. A few suggestions on keeping yourself safe on the forum:

  1. Use your work or a public email so that in the event of a security issue, the bad guys only get what you've already allowed to be public.
  2. Don't use the same email that you use with banking or other financial services.
  3. Use a different password here than you do anywhere else with that email.
  4. Report any private message solicitations from anyone you don't know from the forum or that you haven't asked for.
  5. Be careful of opening any attachments that you haven't asked to be sent.
  6. When doing business with forum members, do your normal due diligence.
  7. Report all spam. If you notice spam that we haven't gotten to, let us know.
  8. Anyone can post a link. If one looks suspect, don't investigate. Report it.
  9. Use Virus Total to scan links for malware if you are unsure: https://www.virustotal.com/#/home/url
  10. Don't publicly divulge private information about yourself or emp0loyees.
  11. Feel free to PM me or post in the Water Cooler or Feedback and Suggestions forum to report any suspected issues.

Lost In Space reboot on Netflix

If you haven't heard, Netflix fired up a reboot of the old TV show "Lost in Space". I grew up on this show as a little kid so I've been pretty excited about it.

It launched last night and I watched the first 3 episodes. I'm pretty satisfied with it so far. They of course updated it. It's not the campy, bad tech show from the 70's and so far they've done a good job of establishing the base story line.

Here's the trailer.

Has anyone else watched it yet? Or care?

New discussion areas added, others merged.

I've been doing some spring cleaning on the forum and just wanted to give everyone a heads up of a few things look different.
Basically I merged some areas that can work best together, and changed some areas that could use a wider discussion field.

I didn't delete any forums or thread so anything you were following is still accessible the same way.
Just the order of some things have changed.

Your Small Business
Merged "Business Plans and Ideas" with "Starting your Business"
Moved "Financing your Small Business" as sub forum of "Starting Your Business"
Kept "Franchising" for some reason.

Marketing ( changed category name to "Marketing and Advertising")
Changed "Traditional Marketing" forum title to just "Marketing".
Made "Social Media", and "Internet Marketing" sub forums of "Marketing"
Moved "Blogging" under Copywriting
Kept the "Advertising Review" sub forum but changed it to "Advertising" for all general advertising discussions.

Your Website
Changed "WordPress" section to include all CMS's and Sitebuilders, and moved it under "Design and Development"
Made eCommerce and stand alone forum.

Added Technology Section
Hardware-
Computers, mobile devices, POS systems, networking and other electronics. This is the place to discuss.

Software-
Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Cloud services, productivity software...this is the place to ask questions.

Digital Privacy and Security-
Protect yourself and your business. This is the place to discuss security and privacy issues concerns.

That's it.

Feedback is always appreciated.

Scams old and new

Not quite sure the right place for this.

We are all familiar with scams regarding consumers. Everything from “The prince of Slabobia needs youn you to help move 12 billion dollars to a U.S. account”, to the old get rich quick schemes and investments.

There are also scams that target smaller companies seeking funding. In the pre-internet days they would contact a company by phone, letter or even in person offering large investments in your “great new business”. They’d go through a make believe due diligence and then promise a huge investment. Then the final catch, they just needed a “lock up” or “commitment fee” to finalize the deal. Seen that a few times because I am often involved in raising capital.

Now, through the internet they use a new version of the old scheme. They contact a company by email in the name of a legitimate business. They just slightly alter the email address from the real one. The company receives the email, looks up the company on the internet and finds a very legitimate investment house or brokerage. Then it becomes the same deal with a double whammy. They collect all your financial info as part of their “due diligence”. Then of course they want the lock up fee. But now they have the extra bonus of identity theft.

I just helped (hopefully) bust one of these deals. They contacted us in the name of a large asian company. They used the presidents name and address and an email address so very similar to the real one. I was pretty sure it was the beginning of a scam and found the bogus email to be registered in Nigeria (infamous for internet scams). I was able to contact the real company and they were very grateful and said they would pursue the scammer(s).

Framing a Reward is as important as the Reward itself

We've had a lot of questions about loyalty and rewards programs. Feedback is mixed depending on who you ask. This article suggests approaching it from a different angle. Not according to the offer, but according to what kind of engagement it creates overall.

Quote:

Here’s one idea. Instead of asking, “What rewards should we give away?” ask “How should we give away a reward?” It might not be the reward per se, but how the reward is framed, and the steps customers must take to obtain the reward, that matters.
Read the article here: https://www.nirandfar.com/2014/11/framing.html

Has anyone tried a rewards program? Did it work? If not, did you learn anything about why it failed that you can share with the group?

Want to close or combine some areas and add others. Need feedback.

Some of the discussion areas we have don't get used much, if at all. While I do want to add sections to discuss more tech related issues, I should also tighten up some others so that the forum sections don't get out of hand.

Some ideas are:

1. Combine the "Business Plans and Ideas" sub forum with the main "Starting your Business forum".
2. Combine the "Franchising" sub forum with the main "Managing your business" forum".
3. Removing the "Advertising Review" sub forum.
4. Making "Blogging" a sub forum of "Copy-writing".
5. Making "E commerce" it's own main forum instead of a sub forum
6. Making WordPress, other CMS's and include site builders like SquareSpace as a sub forum of "Design and Development"

Then I would be adding 3 new discussion areas under a Technology heading:
1. Hardware
2. Software
3. Security and Privacy.

I think this would trim down the amount of unused areas while adding subjects that are important needed in business today without making the forum bigger. To be clear, I wouldn't be closing or deleting any sections, just moving a few things around.

What do you guys think?

How would you come up with an approximate valuation for this business?

How would you come up with an approximate valuation of a 7-year-old U.S. music school business that has $224k gross revenue, made a small profit of $10k last year, and owes $120k in loans? The profits (after all expenses) were $5k, $3k, and $0 in the previous years. The business is well-known in the area and has a solid reputation.

facebook announces new privacy policies and settings

Many of us use Facebook for both business and personal reasons and I'm sure many are as upset as I am over the lack of care they've exhibited over who can and cannot access our info, and how easy it was to exploit that.

A few days ago Zuck announced new policies for advertisers, but for us there's finally a way to delete your data, and they're redesigning the settings to make things easier to find. It was clear for a long time that the settings were not user friendly on purpose to make things hard to find. It appears that game is over.

Still not feeling all warm and fuzzy about Facebook, but at least they're doing something and are doing it quickly.
More here.

You can now add your company name to your profile

I know we're all here for the discussion, but I thought it would be nice to be able to have our company display under our names.

If you go to Settings-> Edit Profile and scroll down to "Additional Information", you will see a field for "Company:".
When you add your company name there it will show publicly under your profile image. This is completely optional.

For consistency I'd rather keep it to company names only. No URL's, political statements, twitter handles, favorite teams, and so on.
If you don't yet have a company name, leave it blank.

Let me know if you have any issues.

I have sbforums.net. Should I change the forum URL to it?

At this point is there much benefit to using a shorter URL? I would keep the old one pointed to it as well.

Forum is now a secure connection.

I know getting an SSL/TLS on the forum was something that was on VG's list. Thankfully it's easier and cheaper than it used to be.
Having a secure site basically means that the connection between you and the site is encrypted so that snoopers cannot insert themselves anywhere in between.

Besides the fact that Google is going to start putting up ugly messages when sites aren't secure, I thought it was just prudent to do so.

Let me know if anyone experiences any issues because of it.

Will you continue to use Facebook after the recent news?

By now I'm sure everyone has heard at least something about Facebook being under fire for not protecting our information well enough and how Cambridge Analytica was able to exploit Facebook to steal data on millions of users AND their contacts. One the one hand we all knew that Facebook was a data collection company, but many of us had no idea the level of information that advertisers, or pretty much anyone else could get.

For me, it's not so much about the information. This isn't a new things when it comes to marketing and advertising. It's that it's connected to my name and email and that 3rd parties have access to my specifics for so long. A while back I stripped my Facebook profile of pretty much any info, and I don't have the app on my phone. I knew the app was scraping the info from my phone, tracking my location, and accessing my contacts a long time ago. It's also a battery hog. But I'm still a little pissed that thier goal of collecting data over rode common sense to make sure it was protected.

I have to use Facebook for work, but I'm wondering how others feel. Has anyone deleted their account?

Feedback on new dog clothing website idea

Hello fellow entrepreneurs,

Recently I launched chic-puppy.com: 1st Brand for Dog Lovers Shared. Cute pet shirts & hoodies[/url]

With the idea in mind to brand dog themed clothing. I would really appreciate all your valuable feedback.

The idea is to widen the marketability to all dog owners, where some of the current matching dog human clothes are specific toward dog owners that like hip hop or hiking etc.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback & can respond to any questions. I am new to forums, so I am hoping to payback this community with feedback where I can help.

Thank you very much for your time.

Desert Proofreader Thirsts for Perfection

Hi everyone, I’m Richard and I’m the “greybeard” at Greybeard Writing Services. I live in the desert area of San Bernardino near Idyllwild.

I’ll proofread your text for accuracy to keep your reputation and brand secure, and copy-edit to make it shine in any form: web content, docs, pdfs, or paper. I specialize in plain language for science and technical publications, authoritative business copy and B2B, and custom styles for authors of fantasy, science fiction, and weird tales. I can also give your website or blog an SEO checkup, especially if you are on Wordpress.

My proofreading business is new but I’ve been the go-to grammar geek at every job I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a freelance online presence for 12 years. I also blog for myself, write content for online services like Copypress, and develop ebooks and other creative projects. When I’m not working (haha), I volunteer proofreading for Project Gutenberg. When I’m REALLY not working, I love to hike the foothills, read or play guitar.

That’s my story. Nice to be here. I hope to learn a lot from you all about marketing and growing online. :)

Running an in-house raffle/sweepstakes - How do we do this on our own?

Wanting to offer a contest for customers who purchase from us. Seemed simple at first.. buy a course from us and you are entered and prize will be drawn x/y/zzzz. In looking over contest rules with facebook, youtube, etc..it's rather vague. In looking at legal websites, they seem to imply that the Government is going to tell me how to run my business and not let me give things away to paying customers? Is that correct?

I just want to run an in-house contest, just for paying local customers. I don't need anyone else involved, not the govt., nothing...how do I go about this? We want to offer an Iphone X as the prize.

I've seen sites that flat-out disagree with one another..some say you manage the contest, you set the rules, don't have to award unless min. number of participants, etc. while some say no way to all of that. Very confusing.

I live in California. What is the loophole here so I can run a sweepstakes/contest/raffle as an incentive for people to purchase from us?

Hello!

Hey everyone! My name is Paul and I run an office building in Monmouth County, NJ. I took over this family business about three years ago and have been doing pretty well since but recently found out that I will be losing one of my largest tenants later this year. To prepare for this setback, I am looking for new ways to both bring my business into the future (some things are a bit dated around here) and also to attract new tenants. I came to this forum looking to connect with other small business owners and entrepreneurs in order to try and gain any insights I can into ways to accomplish these goals. I am most interested in learning what I can do to make my office Suites rental building stand out from the many others and also to appeal more to people looking to rent spaces. Since this forum is full of small business owners and entrepreneurs (my main consumers) I figured it was the perfect place to start! So, my questions for all of you reading this are...

When shopping around for office space, where do you look? Websites? Papers? Radio? Billboards?
What things have/ would draw you to a certain space/ building?
Have you even seen a space and thought you had to have it? If so, what attracted you to it?
How important is the community of your office building to you? example: How important is making friends/ connections at work?
Can you think for any unique things that an office Suites manager could do to attract new tenants?

I ask these questions because I have been entertaining the idea of organizing office happy hours/ holiday parties, setting up a break room complete with couches and television (and possibly even a small pool table), etc and would like to know how important these additions would be to the consumer (tenants).

If you have ANY insights at all, positive or negative, I would love to hear them!
