Forum Security Best Practices

It's tricky being both public online as a business, and trying to keep yourself safe from bad guys. As a small business forum we are susceptible to spammers and other unscrupulous actors trolling for access to this target market. A few suggestions on keeping yourself safe on the forum:

  1. Use your work or a public email so that in the event of a security issue, the bad guys only get what you've already allowed to be public.
  2. Don't use the same email that you use with banking or other financial services.
  3. Use a different password here than you do anywhere else with that email.
  4. Report any private message solicitations from anyone you don't know from the forum or that you haven't asked for.
  5. Be careful of opening any attachments that you haven't asked to be sent.
  6. When doing business with forum members, do your normal due diligence.
  7. Report all spam. If you notice spam that we haven't gotten to, let us know.
  8. Anyone can post a link. If one looks suspect, don't investigate. Report it.
  9. Use Virus Total to scan links for malware if you are unsure: https://www.virustotal.com/#/home/url
  10. Don't publicly divulge private information about yourself or emp0loyees.
  11. Feel free to PM me or post in the Water Cooler or Feedback and Suggestions forum to report any suspected issues.
