Hello all,
This might not be the right section for this, I think it fits best here out of all the sections as it has to do with package marketing -
Our company makes whole-foods based nutritional supplements aimed at daily use to provide you with energy, mental clarity, etc etc.
Up to this point we have been 100% online sales, but over the last couple of weeks we have began going into a more traditional retail setting with some local grocery stores (we're going to start by going direct rather than through a UNFI or national distributor).
Our product is currently only available in 30 servings at a premium price point in our category (~$60). After feedback from retail buyers - we are going to repackage our products to make them more "retail ready". With that, we're trying to decide if we cut the 30 serving product (keep that one online only) and go to market with a 10 serving or a 20 serving retail ready package (probably in a supplement tub). I don't think we can afford to do both a 10 and 20 serving right off the bat.
My dilemma is that I believe the 10 serving would do well because it would be at a much better price point to introduce new customers and wouldn't have as much of a "sticker-shock" effect. Since we're an unheard of brand I doubt many customers are willing to drop $60+ on our products before knowing if they like them. But, as people hopefully want to reorder they would be likely looking to purchase more than a 10 serving version, which could ultimately lead them to ordering the 30 serving bag from our website, which then might step on the retailer's toes a bit.
I've google searched the heck out of it and can't find any research or studies that give a good idea on consumer buying habits and other experiences with serving sizes, so I'd love anyones opinions or links to any articles.
I know that's a doozy of a post, but thanks in advance to anyone who takes it on!
