How I was able to expand my Small Business

My name is Anita, I own a small fashion business. There was a time I needed capital to expand my business but found it hard to come by. During this period I was very desperate and I needed this money by all means. Due to my desperation, I ended up been scammed by fake loan lenders. When I finally realized, I had lost some money to these fake lenders. When I thought everything was crumbling and my small business was about to be frozen out, then I met a man who happens to be a CEO to a financial firm. I think he was sent to me by God because at that time I was so fed up with life and everything that came with it. Then after much discussion with this man, he offered to help me with a loan without a down payment or a collateral and with a very low interest rate. I was surprised and I didn't believe it. He invited me over to his office and told me he could help me out by offering me a loan to help me revive and expand my small business. He said all he needed from me was for me to promise him I was going to make the repayment of the loan back to his firm as at when needed. I told him I would be up to it and I promised I would make repayment as agreed. The reason why I am putting up this post is because I know there are people out there who are passing through this situation and who needs help also. I wanted to share my story for everyone to know how I made it this far and how I was able to build my business to a very Good level now. I also think others might need this help too. Thanks. Anita.

How to start a business with no support

I have an idea for a business. I think it’s a great business as no one here in my area is doing it. I need very little to start. All I need to do really is advertise it. The problem I’m having though as I’m sure isn’t unheard of before. My wife and family are telling me that it will not succeed. We have bills that need to be paid and starting a business will surely mean we will go behind for a while as I need to be available to run it and wouldn’t be able to work anywhere else. I expect it to start off slow but it will pick up in a short time I think. I have complete faith in the idea but I’m hearing things like that won’t work and my idea is being very easily dismissed. What can I do? I’m looking for help from someone that has dealt with naysayers before and have become successful, as I’m sure that if I start this venture it will be successful in a short time.

Without any help from the community, this forum will close

I don't know any other way to say it. I've been subtle, I've been blunt. I've begged. Been pretty clear that this forum is in trouble and needs just a little bit of one time help from the community to get back on track. I'll do all the work. I sincerely thought it would be worth pitching in $5, $10 to enough people.

I'd hate to see this forum go. It's why I took it over from VG who had been running it out of pocket for the last 10 years, and was going to shut it down. It took me months to decide to do so mainly because I was scared that it was going to be an additional expense that I just couldn't take on right now. But I took a chance thinking that it was important to people, important enough to save, and that I'd work it out somehow.

This is the last place online that entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can come to for help, advice, how to's, words of encouragement, or just to talk shop that isn't full of spam, trolls, solicitations, or that isn't an excuse to just accumulate a targeted email list to sell to whoever has the money.

I used to be proud that anyone could ask ANYTHING here, and someone would know something about it and help with solid advice without soliciting them or a bunch of BS.

But maybe the lack of support is a sign that it's run its course.

I hope that's not true. If you've been agonizing over contributing $10 or more for the last 12 days, now is the time.
Without your help we will not be here in the next few days. And considering it takes 2-5 days to withdraw from Go Fund Me, waiting till the last minute is too late.

https://www.gofundme.com/support-the...business-forum

For the 2 people who have contributed, if it goes the way it's looking like it's going to, I will refund your donation and know that I really appreciate that you stepped up to try and help.

Question About Writing A Business Plan...

Hi,

New here! I just wanted to see if anyone could help me out...
I'm still in the beginning stages of planning my business (a cafe bakery), and I've seen a lot of mixed feelings about business plans around online. But I definitely feel as though I need to write one since I am seeking funding. However, I've read many articles about how to write business plans, as well as read through many sample cafe business plans. I've pretty much completed the research for all of the Market Research sections, but I'm a little lost when it comes to the sections that discuss where your business is located, the demographic in that particular area, the size of the building, etc... I mean, it seems straightforward enough...except for the fact that I'm still in the process of seeking funding. So how am I supposed to know all of these details? Some of the sample business plans I've seen go into detail about the address, what's next to the building, and other intense details. It may be a stupid question but...does one need to actually go through the process of trying to get a specific building before writing this part of the business plan? I'm pretty proficient in research, and writing so that part of the business plan doesn't seem bad but having to try to find a building to rent/buy before even finishing writing it when I need funding seems a bit overwhelming... I wasn't sure if you could just write about the area you're planning to have it in? Or the building you hope to rent? Or do you really have to like, put money down on a building space?
Again, I'm really new to this so it may be a dumb question but I appreciate any answers anyone can give me. So thank you in advance!

Stopping by to say "Hi"

I was looking for a small business forum to be a part of and this one seemed pretty active so I thought I would give it a try. Really just looking for a good place to make some more connections as well as find advice from current business operators/owners. My friend invited me to build a business with him last fall so I moved from North Carolina to Texas this past April. The business was made LLC official in January so I've come in at the very beginning of it and the opportunities are really exciting but it's also scary venturing out like this. Neither of us have started or run a business, and my friend is the only one with a business degree. So far we have been blessed with a few mentors to help point us in the right direction but I really wanted to immerse myself in a small business community. I want to be able to learn and impart as much info/knowledge as I can.

About myself:
I am 25 years old and have known for a long time that I wanted to work for myself, own a business, or only work in a small business. I never liked working for corporations, they control too much of our work lives and sometimes even our lives outside of work. My long term goal is create a successful business that allows me to provide employment for the community so that we can all pursue our personal dreams and goals. I love being with family and friends, spending time outdoors, watching movies, playing video games, and living life to the fullest. For me, running a business is part of living my life to the fullest. It's going to take a lot of hard work, but I believe I'll get there.

About my business:
Drone Mission, LLC a drone solutions business based out of Colleyville in the DFW area of TX. We specialize in orthomosaic and 3D mapping, roof inspections, aerial photo and videography, company commercials, turf health analysis, and agriculture analysis. Drones are becoming an integral part of how companies run their services and we are not afraid to try out new solutions with drones. Part of starting a business is venturing into the unknown, and we plan to keep venturing out even after we find the perfect niche for us in the market.

TAA - Import and Export from China

Hi all, I am trying to understand the Trade Agreement Act, which regulates trade between most countries, but rules out China. Our company's headquarters and warehouse are in China, so this applies to us.

My questions are:
1. Most of our orders are well over $3,000. Also, our products have to do with providing resources that the US needs (electricity/electrical reactors). Can we qualify for a TAA exemption?
2. Some have no problems doing business with us, even though we are Chinese. For the first time, however, we were turned down, because of this TAA matter. Why do some companies abide by TAA and others don't?
3. Is this the right forum for this kind of question? And, if not, which forum could I go to to post questions like this?

Would appreciate your responses.

Thank you,

CJ

Unnecessary Rent Gouging?

Good morning,

We have owned a small daycare in a plaza for about 5 years. Unfortunately when we purchased we may have chosen the wrong path to ownership - hindsight and all that. Our rent is absolutely ridiculous compared to other businesses and what it should be and seems to be set based on the landlord's unstandardized methods. Had we purchased outright, we'd be making a profit but we were never fully offered that. We're not the only business in the plaza in this predicament but we are the only one who is now forced to sell as a result.

My parents own the business and were both teachers; my sister is an ECE. I hate to see something that they wanted and loved having to be sold because of a landlord that refuses to treat every tenant equally and offer any options out of this insane situation. It seems, in talking to other tenants in the area under his control, that we're now paying way too much and paying over and above what is actually necessary. Is there any sort of person or group that can advocate for us or assist so my family can save the business before the sale goes through? Like I said, I hate to see this happen to the people that it matters the most too. And I would hate to see how the new owners may negatively affect that children and families involved.

Thank youfor your time and assistance,
Laura Fry

Perhaps someone here has some direct experience with this so I will ask here.

The Small Business Forum needs your help!

As many of you have probably noticed, upgrades to the forum have been slow moving. Although I have the will and time to contribute, some upgrades cost money and at the moment I just don't have the personal budget to finance it.

What I need to do is upgrade the forum to the latest version which I was unable to do on my own. Too many technical challenges. For best results I really need to hire the techs at V-Bulletin to do it for us.

Hosting and other expenses have also been out of pocket, and not much is made from ads to cover it.

I feel like much needed upgrades will help the forum be more self sustaining, help with content creation and attract partnerships, and help us to grow membership. We don't need much. Any contribution is welcomed.

I've thought long and hard about doing a fundraiser, and decided that it was time I asked for help.

I've set up a Go Fund Me page on behalf of the forum to try and raise a few bucks to get as much of these things done as possible.
https://www.gofundme.com/support-the...business-forum

This forum has been a great resource for me before and after I started my own business and I hope it has been for many of you too over the years. But it's time to improve it and make it even better and I need some help.

Facebook hack exposes personal info. Change your passwords.

The numbers for the Facebook hack keep changing and info about the severity of the hack keeps coming in.

Quote:

Facebook reports that for 15 million of the affected users, those behind the attack gained access to two types of information -- their name and contact details such as phone numbers and email addresses. For 14 million users, attackers accessed much more information including name and contact info as well as other profile details like username, gender, location, language, relationship status, religion, hometown, current city, birthdate, education, work, places where they checked in or were tagged, website, people or Pages followed, recent searches and device types used to access Facebook.
https://ift.tt/2EhKOM8
What I recommend is to at least PLEASE change your passwords. No, it won't go back and time and make this not happen, but there's no reason (If you are one of the 50 million) to keep letting the hackers come back and access your information at will, or worse, impersonate you to your connections or financial institutions.
Remember, for most of you this thing is also on your phone. The phone that you use for business.
I also recommend stripping your personal Facebook profiles of ALL information but that's for another thread.

Is anyone concerned about this? Or are you numb to hacked stories and this is just another one to throw on the pile?

Considering that Go Fund Me takes 2.9% plus .30 per donation, I set the goal a little higher than what is actually needed to cover those fees.
Even if I don't reach the goal, anything will help support the forum.

This forum has been a great resource for me before and after I started my own business and I hope it has been for many of you too over the years. But it's time to improve it and make it even better and I need some help.

If you're interested in supporting the forum through advertising, reach out to me and purchase a 480X60 ad spot to promote your business on the forum.

To help promote our fundraiser, here are some links to our Go Fund Me page.

Google is shutting down Google+

It's death has been predicted and even suggested for years, but today Google finally announced that it's pulling the plug.

Quote:

Google shutting down Google+ after exposing data of up to 500,000 users the search giant didn't disclose the vulnerability because it feared regulatory scrutiny, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
A vulnerability in the Google+ social network exposed the personal data of up to 500,000 people using the site between 2015 and March 2018, the search giant said Monday Google said it found no evidence of data misuse. Still, as part of the response to the incident, Google is planning to shut down the social network permanently.
https://www.cnet.com/news/google-rep...-google-users/

Functionally, Google+ is awesome. But for normal people it's confusing. I hate how Google tried to force associating with your blog posts and articles with your G+ profile, and frankly no one really used it. Even though I have multiple profiles and follow a lot of tech groups and people on it, they all also have Facebook and Twitter profiles and since that's where everyone else is, that's where I mostly see their stuff.
Is anyone going to miss G+?

How to use Fuzzing to obscure your information from public databases

If you’ve ever done a Google search for yourself you know how much detailed info can be found about you within seconds.
This article explains what Fuzzing is and how you can apply it to obscure your information so that criminals have hard time finding accurate information about you, your business or your family.

Just wondering, how many people are concerned about the info that is out there about them?

Health care costs still going up

We just got the deal on our health care for the coming year. Up 9K to $ 91,000.00 for a handful of people. We have had to cut coverage to even keep it this low. There is only one option available to us cheaper than what we have and that one would bankrupt any of our employees who happened to get sick since it covers so little and has such a big copay. As bad as that increase sounds it is a much lower rate of increase than in past years when we were getting 25 & 35% increases.

Licenses, permits, zoning clearance to do direct sales at people homes and in firm?

Hi all!

Sory for the mistakes I do, I am not an English-speaking person.

Is it necessary to obtain licenses, permits, and zoning clearance to do direct sales at people homes and in firm premises?
I would like to do advertising campaigns in targeted locations. People will be offered an appointment for me to come around.

Thanks.

Zen Cart

Does anybody have any recent experience with Zen Cart or comparable? I'm looking for an open source install in its own directory site. I mention zen cart because I used to be quite familiar with it. I'm not interested in something that integrates with WordPress right now or a site maker sort of solution.

Thanks.

Google Analytics

I could figure this out myself if I ever get a few free minutes but it has been a little quiet here lately so I will post this. Has anyone ever had Google analytics stop working just all of a sudden. I just happened to look at my stats on a few sites and one is working fine but two others show zero visitors in the last month. Now I guess it is possible that no one visited those two web sites or the other option is that out of the blue Google stopped tracking them. Both are WordPress sites by the way.

I am so swamped right now I don't have much time to see what is happening but at some point in the next few days I will try to visit both sites using both my home and my office computers then see if it shows my visit. That should at least pin down if it is no traffic or if Google tanked out on me.

Don't overlook the little things that may add up.

We all have very different businesses and what I am going to talk about in this post may not apply to some businesses.

I think we all know there are cash back credit cards out there. We started a few years ago to try to maximize our cash back and started to pay our vendors that would accept credit card payments with a credit card instead of a check. Of course we pay off the credit card in full each month. I was surprised when they sent a rep out to see if she could help us find things that we missed and could pay with a credit card and the big one she did find was our health insurance bill.

We do have more than one cash back card but I happened to get a statement in today's emails that gave me the total of our cash back from the start of the program It is:

$ 32,293.00

Sometimes we look for big ways to cut costs and those little ones can add up.

Facebook for business is dead to me now

I've about had it with Facebook and have decided to delete my Facebook business page.

Years ago Facebook conned us into creating business pages to engage with our customers and target audience who are already there. But that is not the case anymore. Mike Elgan's article in Computer World pretty much sums it up for me:

Quote:

With Facebook’s “monopoly on everybody” — which is to say that Facebook has long been the social network with the most users and therefore the strongest network effects — companies were told that they had to be on Facebook because that’s where the customers were, and also because, on social media, messages can go viral, resulting in what is essentially free advertising.

After convincing companies to set up business pages on Facebook and encourage customers to show up on Facebook and “like” the pages, Facebook then proceeded to deliver only a small fraction of posts to only a small fraction of a company’s customers and fans.

A recent Ogilvy study shows that just 1% or 2% of a company’s fans actually see brand posts.

If you want to reach a few more of your own customers on Facebook, you have to pay Facebook.
It's not that I mind paying every now and then to boost a post. It's that now you have to pay to boost EVERY post if you want your followers to actually see it.
This has been an ongoing complaint by pretty much everyone with a business or "fan" page for a couple of years now.

The final straw for me was when I had to ask permission to change the name of my page, only to be denied and told I would have to start a new page and could not bring my followers with me. I appealed, won the appeal and then they changed my page name for me, to the wrong name. At that point it all culminated into "This is way too much trouble" for what I actually get out of it.

I know Facebook works for those who are running ads and are willing to boost every post, and brands who already have huge followings through various forms on marketing across the web, and other media. I also have clients, like bar owners who do well on Facebook to keep engaged with their local audience and customers.

I still beleive in Facebook ads and their ad technology for many kinds of businesses with appropriate budgets.

It's just not worth it for me and my type of business.

I'm still good with Twitter. Twitter is still what it promised. I post, people who follow me see the post. Also, I see the posts of people I follow, not the posts that Twitter thinks I'd rather see. Twitter works well for me to compartmentalize and see and engage with exactly what i asked to see and engage with.

As I've always said for years, don't put more effort into driving people to your social media profiles than you do your own website. Your website (and your mailing list) should always be the main focus of your online marketing efforts. It's yours, you own it, and you don't have to worry about someone else changing the rules of who can and can't see your content.

Am I the only one who's had it with Facebook business pages?

What to look when buying baby clothes

Many parents enjoy when they have bought cloth for a newborn baby, especially new parents at first time. Newborn babies are always a gift for any parents.
The parents have no idea sometimes when first-time purchase baby cloth, the little sizes that won't fit for long. Parents should not buy more clothes the first time. Make your baby comfortable, buying limited cloth and escape waste of money. Just be sure to everything first.
1.Choose the perfect clothes size of your baby's age
2. Think about clothes is comfort or not
3.Keep Away From Designer Baby Clothes
4. Be selective when buying clothes

How important is social media in your marketing today?

I've been around this forum for the better part of 10 years and we've had a ton of discussions on best ways to use social media for marketing.
Over the years things have changed. For one some say social media has turned into a cesspool of link bait, scams, and trolls that makes it hard for anyone to stand out.

Another is that it's clear to most now that social media isn't the easy button of free marketing that people made it out to be. Just like any other form of marketing it requires a strategy, and takes time and money to create engaging content, images, and to promote your thing above the others so that it has a chance to be seen by your target audience. Basically the principles of advertising.

There's also the security and privacy issues that are now turning many users away from platforms like Facebook.

I personally still use Facebook mainly because I run a small group there, but I don't do much with my business page anymore. As a matter of fact I've pretty much stripped my Facebook profile of any information about me. And I refuse to put it on my phone or use messenger in any way.

I still like Twitter and that's mostly where I will share business or industry related stuff, but I use it more or less like a news feed of my interests. Twitter is my go to place when I need customer service from someone. It works better than email and phone calls because if you call people out the right way on Twitter, they will respond pretty quickly and help with your issue.

I've recently started updating my LinkedIn profile since I'll be needing it soon.

Other than that I have accounts on Instagram, Snapchat..pretty much every platform but I don't do much of anything on them other than follow other people and things.

So I'm wondering, in 2018 how many of you still rely on, or want social media to be a major element of your overall marketing strategy?
And for those of you who do still rely on it, what have you learned over the years...what insight have you gained that you can share with others?

Small-business cybersecurity bill becomes law

Finally some good news and some help from the government. It's not a magic button, but at least it's some assistance and resources to help small businesses.
According to Symantec and The National Cyber Alliance

  1. Almost 50 percent of small businesses have experienced a cyber attack.
  2. More than 70 percent of attacks target small businesses.
  3. As much as 60 percent of hacked small and medium-sized businesses go out of business after six months.

For small business owners this is a critical issue.

Quote:

[The President] recently signed into law the NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Act, which requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop and provide resources to protect small businesses’ digital assets from cybersecurity threats.
According to the bill, the resources must be implemented using technologies that are commercial and off-the-shelf, be based on international standards to the extent possible, include case studies of practical applications, and must include elements that promote awareness of simple, basic controls, a workplace cybersecurity culture, and third-party stakeholder relationships.

For those of you who are concerned about your businesses security, do you think this well help?

How to protect yourself from SIM card swap

Used to be people cloned phones or sim cards to make long distance calls. Now that you phone is your access to things like your bank account, criminals are literally stealing money.

Read this article this morning, thought it would be helpful to help understand what it is, and how to protect yourself from it.

Quote:

At its most basic level, a SIM swap is when someone convinces your carrier to switch your phone number over to a SIM card they own. They’re not doing it for prank call cover, or to rack up long-distance charges. By diverting your incoming messages, scammers can easily complete the text-based two-factor authentication checks that protect your most sensitive accounts. Or, if you don’t have two-factor set up in the first place, they can use your phone number to trick services into coughing up your passwords.

Would you pay a monthly free to use Windows 10?

A few tech reporters including Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet's All About Microsoft are saying that Microsoft may start charging a monthly fee for Windows 10. This has kind of been rumoured for a while with Microsoft calling Windows a service.

Quote:

In a new report, CNet’s well connected Microsoft specialist Mary Jo Foley reports the company will soon launch ‘Microsoft Managed Desktop’ which will charge a monthly fee to configure computers running Windows 10 and keep them running smoothly as new updates are released.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonk.../#6d90eb3072c1

It appears that this will be rolled out to businesses first. Not sure if this will mean consumers too.

Like most everyone else I've used Windows for years. Decades. But I've become pretty comfortable with various Linux distros recently and my new favorite laptop is a Chromebook. Earlier this year I even stopped using Office 365. I doubt I would pay monthly for Windows now that I'm comfortable with other options and don't even use MS services much anymore, but I know millions of people are pretty much stuck.

Would you pay a monthly fee for Windows if it meant worry free updates, and maintenance?
If so, how much do you think is fair?

NIST Cyber Bill Advances to President’s Desk

Quote:

The NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Act, S. 770, is heading to President Trump’s desk where he is expected to sign it into law soon.
The legislation, approved by the Senate on Wednesday, directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to provide resources to small businesses to help them implement NIST’s voluntary cybersecurity framework. The bill also directs NIST to take the needs of small businesses into account when working on future standards. The goal of the legislation, according to bill sponsors Sens. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and James Risch, R-Idaho, is to help small businesses protect their digital assets from cybersecurity threats.
This is good news!

Just curious, if the government provided more cyber security resources to help you secure your business and it's assets would you take advantage of it?
If not, why not and what would help you to do so?

This is an issue that I really care about and know how vulnerable small businesses are, and how helpless it could feel if you don't know what to do or where to start, so this is both curiosity and market research.

something to think about part 2

Too many characters - had to split it in two

The Home Protection Trust is only one of several techniques elder law attorneys use to help their clients keep the home in the family. Other strategies include transfers between spouses, life estate deeds, and transfers to a caregiver child. I’ll write about these other planning options in later posts.
Don’t Try this without Expert Help from an Elder Law Attorney who knows the laws in your State
The planning that will work best for you will depend upon your particular situation and the laws of your state. If you are concerned that your family home will be lost because of the overwhelming costs associated with Alzheimer’s, other dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke or another disabling condition, see an elder law attorney in your state soon. The laws regarding Medicaid and Estate Recovery differ from state to state – you need to get expert advice from a lawyer who knows the laws of the state where you live.

For Further Information
An article in the Wall Street Journal discusses the Home Protection Trust. The article calls it an irrevocable income only trust, because more than just the home can be protected. Here is a link to the Wall Street Journal article: Solving Medicaid Assets Math: Trusts Can Be Used To Pass On a Home; Annuities for Income (I am quoted in this article).

· How to Protect your Home from Nursing Home Costs – Part 2: The Life Estate Deed
How to Protect your Home from Nursing Home Costs – Part 2

The Life Estate Deed

Many seniors will spend some time in a nursing home. Because Medicare’s coverage for nursing home costs is limited most nursing home residents end up on Medicaid. But, unlike Medicare, Medicaid expects to be repaid when you die for money spent on your nursing home and other long term care. It can force your home to be sold to pay the government back. The Medicaid repayment laws are referred to as the Medicaid Estate Recovery program.
Most people want their home to go to their children or other family, not to the government. Many wonder whether there is anything they can do to protect their home from being lost if they end up needing long term care. In this series of articles I am discussing strategies seniors are using to protect their homes from being lost to the government estate recovery program. This post discusses the Life Estate Deed.

What is a Life Estate Deed?
A life estate deed is a way you can give your home to your children while you are alive but retain rights and control over it during your remaining lifetime. For example, you deed your home to your children, but the deed provides that your keep the right to live in the home for the rest of your life. You may also retain various other controls over the property.
In many states, including Pennsylvania, the home will then pass to your children upon your death without going through probate and without being subject to Medicaid Estate Recovery.
There are many different types of life estate deeds. The variations includerevocable deeds which allow you to sell the home without your children’s approval, and irrevocable deeds where you no longer have the ability to sell the property without your children’s consent. These variations and their numerous sub-types can have vastly different consequences in terms of Medicaid.
Seniors sometimes do a life estate deed to a trust rather than directly to their child or children. The trust can offer protection from creditors of your child, or marital problems, or the possibility that your child may predecease you. It can protect your home while providing you with important flexibility to deal with whatever unforeseen changes might occur in the future.
Another variation of a life estate deed involves the senior buying a life estate interest in their child’s home. In the right circumstances this planning option can allow you to protect financial assets and qualify for future Medicaid benefits more easily. But special Medicaid rules apply to the purchase of a life estate in a child’s home and tax consequences must be carefully considered.

Other Issues to Consider
As with so many aspects of Medicaid law, what seems simple on the surface can get very complicated. Many issues other than avoiding estate recovery need to be considered before you sign a deed to your home. For example, a life estate deed can be treated as a gift which can create a lengthy ineligibility period for needed Medicaid long term care benefits. (There are ways this problem can be addressed - such as having the deed transfer take place more than 5 years prior to the application for Medicaid). Avoiding tax complications can also be an important issue.
The life estate deed is a very common planning device that seniors frequently use to protect their homes from the cost of long term care. It’s a planning tool to consider if you are worried that the state will take your home.
But you don’t want to do a life estate deed without getting expert advice from an elder law attorney who understands the Medicaid qualification and estate recovery rules in your state. An experienced elder law attorney can help you sort through the options and determine which option is best for you and your family.

Something to think about

I always know my Gov are crooks, but I did not know Medicaid can force the sale of your belongings to repay their costs.

How to Protect your Home from Nursing Home Costs – Part 1

The Home Protection Trust
The numbers are terrifying. If you are 65 or older you will probably need long term care at some time during your remaining life. Long term care is very costly. It can place a big financial, physical, and emotional burden on your family. Have you planned for the likelihood that you will need long term care someday?
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the main culprits. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in eight people age 65 and older (13 percent) has Alzheimer’s disease, and nearly half of people age 85 and older (45 percent) have Alzheimer’s. The likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s doubles about every five years after age 65.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services two-thirds of people 65 or older will someday need long-term care assistance at home, in an assisted living type facility, or in a skilled nursing home. Over 40 percent will need care in an expensive nursing home for at least some period of time. Currently the average annual cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home in Pennsylvania is over $97,000 a year. A private room costs more.
Many of us will be unable to afford to pay for the long term care we are likely to need as we age. Certainly few families can pay $100,000 a year to a nursing home. Fortunately, when you run out of money to pay for nursing home care, the government Medicaid program will usually pay.
The Medicaid Estate Recovery Problem

Since nursing homes are so expensive, most of their residents do run out of money and end up on Medicaid. But, when you die, Medicaid expects to be repaid for the money it spent on your nursing home or other long term care. It will force your home to be sold to pay the government back. This is called theMedicaid Estate Recovery program.
Most people want their home to go to their children or other family, not to the government. Many wonder whether there is anything they can do to protect their home from being lost if they end up needing long term care.
Finally, I have some good news: with expert planning, and especially if you plan in advance, seniors can ensure that their homes will stay in the family after their deaths and not be lost to estate recovery. Over the next month, I plan to post several articles that discuss different planning options that people are using to protect their homes from the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program.
Today’s post will discuss an option that is available to people who have the wisdom to plan in advance. It can be used to protect both the home and other assets, including investments, for your spouse, children or other heirs after your death. Let’s call this planning option The Home Protection Trust.
Trust has Advantages over Giving your Home to your Children

Medicaid Estate Recovery forces the sale of things, like your home, that you own when you die. So one way people try to avoid the recovery program is to give things away before they die.
People sometimes try to protect their homes from nursing home costs and estate recovery by giving the home outright to their children. They plan to rely on their children to “do the right thing.”
While this strategy may ultimately protect the home from Medicaid Estate Recovery, it carries many risks. It’s not as simple as it seems. One problem is that deeding your home to your children will make you ineligible for Medicaid for a long period of time. You may have no way to pay for that care. In Pennsylvania, under our State’s filial responsibility laws, the nursing home can then sue your children who may end up being personally responsible to pay for your care. (Many other states have similar laws).
Deeding your home to your children can also have significant tax disadvantages, and can put the senior at risk of losing the home in the event their child predeceases them or runs into financial or marital problems. More than once I’ve been consulted by a client who regretted having given their home to their child and ending up with their son-in-law or daughter-in-law as their landlord.

Usually, a better option is to deed the home so that it is owned by a trust rather than being owned by a child. [The term trust describes the holding of property by a trustee (one or more persons or a trust company or Bank) in accordance with the provisions you create in a written trust instrument.]
Using a trust, your property can be protected from estate recovery when you die, even after a long stay in the nursing home. And since your child is not the owner of the property it is protected from any bad things that may happen in your child’s life as well.
A trust allows you to protect your real estate (and other assets if you wish) from long term care costs while avoiding the risks and negative consequences of outright transfers to children. By transferring the home and other assets into a properly designed trust, you can still reserve some interest in and control over the transferred assets – advantages that are not available when transfers are made outright to a child.
For example, the trust will normally provide that you have the right to reside in the home for the rest of your lifetime. No one can throw you out or ask you to pay rent. You still own the home for tax purposes, so you can still deduct the taxes, and claim any property tax rebates. You can claim the residential exclusion from income tax if the property is sold during your lifetime. And your heirs can get a step up in tax basis if the property is sold after you die, which avoids or limits any income taxes they might have to pay.
The Trust Can Protect More than just your Home
Investments, such as stocks, bonds, bank accounts, and life insurance policies are also commonly protected through the use of this kind of trust. Because more than just your home can be protected this type of trust is given different names. You will hear lawyers sometimes refer to it as a “Family Asset Protection Trust,” or as an “Irrevocable Income only Trust (IIOT),” or as a “Medicaid Trust.”

Who Can Be Trustee?
People often name one or more of their children as trustees - this is kind of like naming someone in a power of attorney or an executor in a Will - the trustee doesn’t own the assets of the trust, they just manage them according to the terms you set up in the trust.
While most people name one or more family members as the trustee, you can also name a professional trustee like a bank. In any event, you can include a provision in your trust that allows you to fire the trustee and appoint a new one at any time. (I like to call this the Donald Trump “You’re Fired!” power).
This is Not your standard Revocable Living Trust
It’s important to note that a Home Protection Trust is very different than the standard revocable “living trust” that many people have already set up. Arevocable living trust does not protect your assets from nursing home costs. The Home Protection Trust is an irrevocable trust specifically designed to protect its holdings from loss if you ever have to apply for Medicaid to pay for your long term care costs.
When you transfer the things you want to protect to the trust you don’t have to sell them. You don’t have to change your investments. What you own now is merely moved under the protective umbrella of the trust. The trust can sell things held by it, and buy new things. If your home is held under the trust, and you decide to move, the trust can sell it and buy a new one.

Planning in Advance.
Because the Home Protection Trust involves the transfer of property for Medicaid purposes, Medicaid’s five year look back period rule on gifts applies. This means that it is best if you can create and fund your trust at least five years before either you or your spouse are likely to need to apply for Medicaid.
In general, you have many more options if you plan well ahead of any illness. Don’t wait for a crisis to happen. With expert advice you can still plan and protect some assets even after a crisis has hit. But because of the Medicaid five year rule regarding gifts, many more options are available when you plan well in advance of any need for Medicaid.

How to separate my business from the pack?

Hello guys,

Recently started a commercial laundry service venture as an opportunity showed up at my wife's work to do their lab coats and stuff. Of course the plan is to take on more business and push to grow it. Now, this is the type of business that is pretty standard, good washing and pressing with no missing drop off dates and competitive prices and no much more you can do.

I admit I my be thinking inside the box with my previous statement and I need your help to come up with ideas that could differentiate my services/company from the pack. If you were a client for this kind of services, what would impress you from a cleaning company that would make you refer it.

Thank you!

Report shows that most Pentesters are successful

Companies of all sizes hire Pentesters to test the security of their networks, apps, websites, wifi and so on.
Generally they give you parameters and say "See if you can get in". Many times the scope is very narrow either because they're only testing a specific access point, or they're only interested in protecting one thing, one way.

Usually the goal is to expoint weaknesses, and then tell them how you did it so that they can fix those holes.

You might think that Ethical hackers and Pentesters use sophisticated methods, zero day ( not known in any database) exploits and expensive tools to do breach a network. That's not true. Most times the easiest ways still work.

Software not updated.
Guessing easy passwords
Email Phishing
Lax on site security

Quote:

The pen testers weren't relying on finding novel software exploits; in only one encounter was a "zero day" exploit used, and that was in conjunction with other, previously known vulnerabilities.

Virtually every vulnerability exploited was a well-documented exploit, including SMB Relay, broadcast name resolution, cross-site scripting, or SQL injection.User credentials are the next most exploitable point of entry, with at least one credential captured in more than half (53%) of all the tests, and testers reported that simple password-guessing was the most effective method of gaining those credentials. The guessing game is assisted by users who include the company name (5%), "Password" (3%), or the season (1.4%), in their password — a password that will be 10 characters or shorter 84% of the time.

When I'm out and about I will scan around for available networks just to see what people have. Homes, stores and other small businesses. 90% of the time I see multiple networks that I can probably get into. Open wifi, old routers, old security standards and so on. Almost NO ONE out there seems to be very well protected.

Whenever I'm in a business at a desk or at a register I'm frequently face to face with the back of a computer with open USB ports starting right at me. Even in the big box stores.

Whether you have an office or location or work from home, how secure do you think you are against the most basic hacks?
If you know this is something you need to get on, what holds you back from getting started?

Just curious where everyone is.

Taking A Huge Leap--- need help

Today, I quit my full-time cushioned salary job to pursue my dream of starting my own marketing firm. I have been studying the world of digital marketing for as long as I remember, having started my first firm at the age of fifteen until it inevitably failed at 16. Two years later, I am trying again, this time having learned from the mistakes that originally doomed my firm from the start.

I need help. For the first time, I have taken a huge leap and left the job that was financially supporting my business, and now with the small amounts of savings I have, am trying to create my own income solely from my startup. However, I am having trouble marketing my business to other businesses. I live in a place full of small companies, but it seems like none of them either seem to really invest in their marketing efforts or doesn't take me seriously enough to invest the amount of money I'm looking for.

It's not like I'm inexperienced, I have been doing this my entire life, have won an award for my talents, and have a proven track record of what I can do. Yet, people look at me and don't take my price tag seriously or question my knowledge on the subject. That's where it's difficult to market my business to small businesses.

What can I do? I really need help and I don't know where to go.

The Average Age of a Successful Startup Founder Is 45

A good read if you need a little dose of reality about the most successful demographic.

Quote:

Our team analyzed the age of all business founders in the U.S. in recent years by leveraging confidential administrative data sets from the U.S. Census Bureau. We found that the average age of entrepreneurs at the time they founded their companies is 42. But the vast majority of these new businesses are likely small businesses with no intentions to grow large (for example, dry cleaners and restaurants). To focus on businesses that are closer in spirit to the prototypical high-tech startup, we used a variety of indicators: whether the firm was granted a patent, received VC investment, or operated in an industry that employs a high fraction of STEM workers.
Quote:

Among the top 0.1% of startups based on growth in their first five years, we find that the founders started their companies, on average, when they were 45 years old. These highest-performing firms were identified based on employment growth. The age finding is similar using firms with the fastest sales growth instead, and founder age is similarly high for those startups that successfully exit through an IPO or acquisition. In other words, when you look at most successful firms, the average founder age goes up, not down. Overall, the empirical evidence shows that successful entrepreneurs tend to be middle-aged, not young.

Open Source Shopping Carts

Years ago, I built an ecommerce site based on oscommerce. It worked fine. I eventually changed the platform to a WordPress plugin that was designed for me. I never was completely happy with the second format, by and large because I didn't understand it or the database structure. I would have preferred, looking back, to using Zencart or something else in a subdirectory on the site. I would have had a cohesive site this way rather than one that used the Wordpress tables as well as the plugin tables. I know there are downsides to this approach, but it allows me to more easily add my scripts and makes the site more transportable to a different platform should I decide to do that.

What are the options today for doing what I described above.

Online Business Ideas?

I had an online business which was quite profitable for many years. It eventually failed for a variety of reasons. I have been inactive for about two years. I am interested in starting something new. I am semi retired. I need to make several thousand dollars / month and can take a couple of years to ramp up to that.

My last business required 12 hour plus days on my part. You could buy on my website, but it really was a consultative sell. A technical sell as well. I had to spend hours on the phone to sell a product. Typical orders typically were in the $2k to $7k range with orders for less or more happening. I no longer have access to the product I was selling. It was a very niche product and I placed in the top several G searches for key products. It was a B2B product.

I know times have changed. but sales hasn't. My first task is finding a product which is suitable for selling online.

I know this is a pretty open ended question, but any advice on where to go from here would be appreciated.

question for people selling on Amazon or Ebay

I decided that I would try selling my highest margin item on Amazon, so I signed up to be a seller. Then discovered that all products have to have an EAN, UPC, ASIN, or one of another product identifier codes. My product doesn't have those so I would have to get one. Someone on Reddit Small Business told me to buy them from a reseller on Ebay, and to look for registered re-sellers to avoid fraudulent codes. I took a look and there are some on there who will email the codes to you, so that's easy enough.

Too easy, my red alert siren is going off. I asked one of the vendors how the number gets assigned to the particular item, and he said either the retailer or Amazon does it. I'm not dumb, I also checked out GITN.org, one of the places where those numbers originate. It's not at all cheap there. Am I correct in thinking that even if I bought a number from an Ebay reseller, I'd still have to pay to register it to my product by paying GTIN.org or similar site?

Anyone running into an issue with TLS1.2?

I was wondering if anyone else is running into an issue with TLS 1.2? Every year we have to do a PCI compliance to continue to accept credit cards. We always passed until this year. From what they are saying all credit card companies are no longer accepting SSL or TLS1 beginning at the end of this month. We are trying to wade through what we need to do to not have our credit card processing ability turned off. We were all in a fog about TLS 1.2 and had never heard of it until today. The info pack they gave us runs 69 pages and is way over our head. So I am curious if anyone on the forum knows anything about it?

Forum backlinks are worthless for SEO and here's why

As a forum admin I can obviously see every new user registration and every detail about where they come from. It's normal for a forum to get a ton of registrations for accounts that are never used, but the restant has taken the time to create backlinks to whatever their thing is.

Some of these are individuals who are still running on 2005 strategies, some are SEO "professionals" who think that is a successful strategy for their clients, and in rare cases its an automated script.

The reason these are futile SEO tactics is because all the tricks are old and I or the other admins are going to delete your account, block your IP, and put you in a blacklist database and a few other things :). Hardly worth the effort to keep changing IP addresses, identities, and emails to keep employing a strategy that does not work.

Also, Google doesn't give forum backlinks the weight they used to. Actually, they pretty much don't give them any. The old days of self manipulation are over.
Forum signatures are helpful for letting members get to know each other, promote their businesses, and maybe reach out for contact when you want to investigate doing business with someone.

But as an SEO strategy, that was over 5 years ago.

Please review and/or suggest improvements for this product description

One of my new products has been getting really high page visits ever since I listed it, but no purchases. A few days ago I tweaked the description to make it more appealing and customer-friendly. (The original was copied from the manufacturer's website, and overly technical.) Copywriting is something I'm still learning to do well. Can you guys take a look and let me know if you think it reads well now, or is it still bad?

You can find it here.

Pets as art

I visit a Chinese buffet and they have a large aquarium that is completely black on the inside (black background, black gravel bottom). The fish are large gold fish, and they are illuminated from the lights on the top of the tank. It is dramatically beautiful and hypnotic to watch the fish illuminated in the darkness. I love watching it, but I could never own one because to me it is using live animals for aesthetic purpose. What are y'alls thoughts about this?

Need to file a DBA (or fictitious business name), how many permutations

do I really need to cover?

Sorry for the message spanning the title and into the body of the post. So I bought the domain sitstaysafe.com for my rebranded shop. I'm keeping the business registered under Something Special Pet Supplies, but want to do business as (slowly transition over the rest of the year for marketing/branding purposes) "Sit. Stay safe!". Obviously I need to have the DBA form list:

Sit. Stay safe!
sitstaysafe.com

What else? Do I really need to include the dot-com? The proper name on all my marketing collateral/visible branding is just going to be the first name.

Lawsuit

I had a thriving business but had some serious health problems and the business failed. I have had no income since Dec 2016 except for social security which I just started receiving. I haven't paid my mortgage since Mar 2017 and am close to foreclosure. I have no money.

I just was served a summons from Calvary SPV who is suing me for just over 8K for an unpaid credit card bill. They are a debt collector. I have 20 days to respond to the summons.

Does anybody have any idea what the best way to proceed with this is? I may end up filing bankruptcy but can't do that yet because of a family death where I am going to be receiving some money.
