Lists of Manufacturers - Oregon

Hello!
I have been searching various resources for a list of manufacturers in Oregon, to no avail.

Do you have any recommendations?

The information I am looking for is:
Manufacturer Name
Product
Address/contact info
Headquarters Location/Information

Wikipedia has a list of manufactures which are based in Oregon, but this refers to corporate headquarters.

I would imagine that the Secretary of State or Dept. Of Labor Statistics would have such a list, but I have yet to find anything.

Thanks in advance!!!

My favorite small business commercial

I realize this is somewhat about business, however I felt like it'd be better placed here since it's not a question. This is my favorite small business commercial. It's from Staples. I've always loved this commercial, and I'd honestly attribute some of my desire to start a business to this commercial alone.

Are there any commercials that you particularly enjoy? Or maybe unique advertisements that can be learned from?

Which domain is better?

Name of the Company is Boxing Hall of Fame, and it currently ranks an average of 5.6 on Google. Good thing is the ranking got up to first page within a couple of weeks for the query "Boxing Hall of Fame". Bad thing is that it doesn't seem to get any closer to the top. So, we own two domain names:

  • BHOF.com
  • BoxingHallOfFame.com (The current one being used)

Competitors seem to use the "Ibhof.com" or "nvbhof.com" - The shorter handle in almost all other cases. Would it help my SEO rank increase if I, too, switch to BHOF.com?

PS: Google has marked the company as "Permanently Closed" although it just moved location. We filed for an address change, and that should be fixed soon.

Name some of the good interior desining websites?

I'm designing a room for my little child and I can't really get any good ideas. Can anyone suggest me the top interior designing websites from where i can take ideas.
Thanks

How about furniture business?

Recently my friends and I have started a small business for providing a series of furniture service.
Our main service: Sourcing and buying furniture in China. Of Course , if any needs for other product, we could assist clients to source and purchase.
Target customers: 1, small business, Grocer, department store
2, Home decoration
3,Hotel/ restaurant project.

Why I have this idea?
1, My hometown is not only one of the biggest furniture manufacturing town but also one of the biggest furniture market. We are very familiar with furniture as the following reason:1) many of my relatives and friends are running a furniture factory; 2) Before starting this business, I have been working as a furniture designer. Also we are familiar with furniture market. 85% manufacturers in alibaba and Globle source are from my hometown.
2, What’s more, more and more people tend to online shopping like ebay, amazon ect. Even though it is a good option to start furniture business locally.

Now the question is :
1, Is there any need for furniture at your place?(As I know, America, Canada and Australia are top 3 of importing furniture from China.)
2, Is this small business for service workable?
3, I have already built a website. Your kindly suggestion will be highly appreciated.( The website link here.)
Thanks in advance.

help with starting a business, have an idea that is a twist on a popular franchise

Hi guys, I have what I think is a really good idea for a restaurant concept. It is similar to a franchise that is already successful but I put my own twist on it.

I currently have an office job that pays the bills and is in a very stable sector. It just doesn't excite me that much and I am not passionate about it. I know some people have the mindset that a job doesn't have to be your passion, because working a job is what enables you to fund your hobbies after work hours. But I really want to work in an industry where I am passionate. I enjoy cooking, have worked in a restaurant all through college, and generally enjoy the hospitality industry. But I ended up taking a major in college that was the "safe bet" (accounting). My questions are:

1. How do I know my concept is viable?
2. Would a good idea be to set up a small pop up shop and sample the product to see if people enjoy it? Or to test with relatives and friends?
3. Is the competition too fierce going up against huge franchises? I don't necessarily believe my end goal needs to be franchising, but my idea is sort of geared towards that.

And I know it's just an "idea" now, nothing more. But I feel excited about the potential.

Thanks for any insight!

Looking for a local Facebook Business Page example

I am trying to find a local Facebook Business page that shares posts that are not related to the product that they sell. I do Income tax returns for locals. People on Facebook are on it to have fun. During tax season. I was sharing crafting ideas for kids and funny clean images to local groups. I do not believe sharing Income tax code is effective

I figured I should introduce myself

Hey everyone! Some of you have already seen me around. I'm 18 years old and am working on my first LLC with two friends. I've taken a few entreprenuerial classes at school, however most of the kids in the class didn't want to be there, which made it difficult to learn. I have a mentor at my high school who is helping to guide us through the process of starting our business, however she does not know the industry or technologies we are going into (Software as a Service), so we will be looking for an additional mentor soon.

I have been accepted to the business scholars program at the University of Utah, and I am the Sterling Scholar of Computer Technology of the Wasatch Front in Utah. This is an award that I won after competing with hundreds of kids from all the different high schools in the Wasatch Front.

I love technology and computer science, and I am entering as a full CS major at the University of Utah. I've been programming since I was 7 years old, and have recently found a love for Java Enterprise Edition, which powers the product that my business will be marketing. The product is an asset reservation system designed for schools, to replace the pen and paper methods currently employed by those schools (which teachers have told me they despise more than anything in the world).

I am very interested in business, however I have found it quite difficult to get started, because I really can't find many materials on how people even go about starting a business. Therefore, please bear with me as I ask many simple and likely naïve questions because I am a beginner to all of this.

Thanks so much, I'm excited to have found this forum!

Won't be on for a couple weeks :(

Hello boys and girls, children of all ages. I figured I'd post something since I haven't posted actively in a while. Basically, a friend of mine has died last night. He was involved in a motor cycle accident where he hit and tree. The impact paralyzed him and broke his spine, then he later died in the hospital.

If for some reason anyone needs to contact me for some reason just private message me or email me, especially if that whole making the site wicked awesome thing happens ;)

Peace my dudes

Keeping track of investments

For my company, all three partners plan to contribute a sum of money to the startup expenses. What is the best way to keep track of the investments made? I have been searching for low price accounting software for my company, and so far have found "ZipBooks" to be pretty nice. The reason for the picky search is that my company does not anticipate making any profits within the first operating year. We are piloting our software for free to a local high school, and will use the pilot for market research. We would all like to see a return on our investments at some point in the future, so I'd like to easily keep track of the investments so that we will know when they have been paid back. We cannot afford an accountant, so we must do all the accounting on our own.

Build-A-Computer Workshop

I am thinking to start a Build-A-Computer workshop, just like the Build-A-Bear Workshop.

I will teach kids (or adults) how to build a PC and how to install the operating system, etc. It should take ~1 hour to complete the whole session.

What do you guys think? Any input is welcome!

Hello everyone from Argentina!

Hello everyone! I'm new here and I hope to learn a lot about business, entrepreneurship and of course, make money!

How much business loan can I get with this profile?

I’m interested in buying an existing business that’s already making positive cash flow, rather than starting from scratch. The business will be a multi-unit fast food franchise (think Jimmy Johns, Dunkin Donuts). I was hoping to get a loan for $2MM as I've found a business with an annual cash flow of $500k, and thought I could pay off the loan with the cash flow alone. However, I asked for opinions regarding my chances on other forums, and most have told me that it would be impossible since I don't have much collateral/assets. If that's the case, if I apply for an SBA (7a) loan, then how much can I realistically get with this profile?

Annual income: $85k

Collateral: $80k

Net worth: $600k

Down payment: 20%

Other: I currently have no other loans or debt, 740+ credit score, good financial history

WTH is up with Sitelock?

Does anyone here use Sitelock? If so I'd love to hear your experiences with them.

First let me say that there seems to be a growing number of web hosts that have just completely given up on even basic security and sends everyone over to Sitelock to pay for their services. Go Daddy, Network Solutions, Hostgator are the ones that I've seen lately. They don't even try anymore. If you have a security issue ON THEIR SERVERS, there is no tech support it's just "Get Sitelock" here's the number.

In my experience it's a nightmare. Never have I seen so many issues as with the few clients that I have who have Sitelock.

Seems like every other day it's reporting malware and threatening to remove their sites if it's not taken care of immediately. Here's the thing though:

The malware reports are always vague, and don't give any indication or direction of what they found and where.
Also, they offer like 70 different types of services and you have to upgrade a few tiers to get the service that supposedly scans and repairs.
But even then, some other malware seems to mysteriously pop up that requires you to get the full "Maintenance package".

I've talked to these people many times and each time I ask "Where is this malware that you say exists?" I never get a straight answer, just directed to press the "Fix" button ( Seriously? Why is that even there? Just fix it!) that doesn't seem to do anything, or an offer to upgrade for the REAL scan and repair service.

Yesterday I asked a Sitelock tech about the constant alerts and asked does ( the host) provide any kind of server security at all. His answer was "Yes they have security for themselves. Not for you". (Seriously? WTF? )

The few times I was able to actually see a bad file, they were really simple. Not malicious enough to do any harm, just enough to give off a bad reading.
Furthermore, the placement of these "bad files" are not in the usual places. I deal with a lot of hacked or infected websites and have seen some bad ones over the years. This is not that. It's single files in closed permission folders inside the WordPress core.

In 10 years I have NEVER seen an infection inside the WordPress core files. Especially not a single file just sitting at the bottom of a folder and nothing else. Almost perfectly scripted just like their own promotional material that says what bad files look like. And this is ONLY happening on Sitelock websites. Of the 50 or so other WordPress installations (many with very heavy traffic) that I work on, have access to, or monitor across various hosts...I don't get anything like this.

This is even happening on new WordPress installations with no themes, additional files or plug ins. Bare bones. I KNOW for a fact that WordPress isn't that weak and vulnerable.

With one client in particular, I am positive that their low traffic website is not being hacked every other day and just one file is being placed on the installation. No hosting is that weak.

I don't know what's going on with these people, but something is NOT right.

Anyone else have any experience with them?

I'm not making accusations, but they appear to be either planted, Sitelock is completely unable to prevent anything at all, or Sitelock is the problem.

I say this because NONE of my other clients without Sitelock have these constant alerts that something is wrong with their site with constant calls to upgrade with the promise of preventing future alerts.

With one client in particular, I am positive that they re not being hacked every other day and just one file is being placed on the installation.

Employee sickness and making up hours

Hello everyone, I'm new here and need some helps with regards to an employee sickness issue.

The employee was off sick for 2 weeks and a day. When they returned to work they requested that they Work extra hours to make up the lost hours for their first week of sickness, and then be paid their sap for the 2nd week off. Can someone tell me if this is legal or a good idea to allow it?

Tracking business purchases made on a personal card

I am in the process of forming an LLC with a couple other people. Right now, we do not have a bank account for our company (we are still writing the business plan). In two days, however, the domain with our company's name will be available for auction and we need to purchase it (they often have "buy it now" buttons). I plan to make this purchase on my own card and get reimbursed later. What is the best way to record this? This may be a simple question, but I don't want to leave any details out. Is there an excel template I can work off of?

Hello Scottsdale!

Hey guys!

My name is Deepak and I am the owner of Advanta Living out in Scottsdale, Arizona!

I googled "small business forum" and what do you know this forum popped up!

I hope to learn a lot and grow with you guys while sharing my knowledge along the way!

Online Accounting

Online accounting through a web application is typically based on a simple monthly charge and zero-administration approach to help businesses concentrate on core activities and avoid the hidden costs associated with traditional accounting software such as installation, upgrades, exchanging data files, backup and disaster recovery.

Allowing limited promotional content to attract talent.

Hello all. I'm quite new to this forum and before my brain is cemented as far as this site goes I'd like to bring in my outsider's perspective.
If this forum allowed a reasonable amount of self promotion including links without no-follow-tags there would be a lot more business talent using the forum. Talented business people are not going to spend their time here unless it's worth it financially in one way or the other. We're all pursuing our own financial interests here, or did I miss something.
Hope to hear what you all think.

Thanks,
Robert

Running personal websites on a company server

I have a web server that I am currently renting personally. It runs my personal website and the websites of my business partners (who are also my friends).

We were considering paying for this server with our start-up's funds and putting our company website on it. We are an LLC.

The problem is that we are unsure if it is okay to run our personal websites on the same server as our company website. Would this provide the ability for courts to pierce the corporate veil in a lawsuit?

I understand the security concerns of running personal websites alongside company websites, but I'm more interested in the legal aspect of it.

Thanks

Checking for fraud

Last year I had a lot of fraud orders so I'm a bit shy this year. One frauder placed 3 big orders last year before I got a chargeback. Then in January I got a chargeback from a December order. Person said her husband thought it was fraud, but the money was still lost in a chargeback. So now this year every large order makes me nervous. Is there anything I should be checking? I use PayPal for payments.

Do You Think Gas Station Business is a Good Business Model to Get into?

Hello everybody.

I am new to this forum, but very glad I found it (thanks to Google). I am and have been in Gas Station Business for over 20 years, I am curious to hear how do other business owners/professionals view this line of business. Do you think it is a good business model? Do you think it is lucrative? While do a search on gas station business in this forum, I read a post where someone mentioned that gas station business is not a easy business as it has too many "moving parts".

I would love to hear from people that are in this business and the ones that are not in this business. You may wonder why I am asking this, well I have a podcast on gas station business(Gas Station Business 101 Podcast) and one of next episodes will be all about how people view this business. I have done a survey among my newsletter subscribers but didn't get the desired result as most of the subscribers are already either in this business or trying to get into it. So to get unbiased opinion I have decided I would turn to all of you for help.

These are the following questions I would love to get answers for:

1. Do you think Gas Station business is a good business to get into?
If the answer is "No" then can you suggest a type of business you think people should get into

2. How much money do you think it takes to get into a gas station business?

3. Do you think the life expectancy of a gas station business is longer than many other retail business?

4. What do you think is the biggest obstacle about getting into a gas station business?

5. If you have the funds and are looking to get into a business, would you consider buying a Gas Station Business?
If the answer is "No", what business would you buy?

I would love to hear your thoughts and answers and if you give me permission, I will mention each of your name on my podcast show so I can properly say "Thanks" to you.

LLC Profit Distributions

I set up an LLC with 6 other people, and we all have unequal contributions. For the profit distribution, we were going divide it between the members based off the capital contributions, but then a huge problem came up. Their was a major in balance of work being done. Those with the most interest are doing the least amount of work, but are getting a significantly higher percentage of the money. I did research, and they said that you can set up your operating agreement to account for inactive members, and I was wondering, Can we change our percentages every year, based on the work done by each member done, and do this right before the taxes are due, so that people do not lose their incentive to work? Do the percentages have to be set in stone? Is their another way to pay the members of a LLC without having to do it via percentages?

Another somewhat related question is does all the money your company makes have to be paid out to the members at the end of the year, so it can be taxed, or can it go into a company fund, like a reserve fund, without it needing to be taxed first, or run through the members taxes?

Links and Images on Twitter won't count against 140 characters.

It hasn't been officially confirmed, but many outlets are reporting it. I hope it's true. We've only been waiting 5 years for them to get off of the pot on this.

Twitter Inc. is making a major shift in how it counts characters in Tweets, giving users more freedom to compose longer messages.

The social media company will soon stop counting photos and links as part of its 140-character limit for messages, according to a person familiar with the matter. The change could happen in the next two weeks, said the person who asked not to be named because the decision isn’t yet public. Links currently take up 23 characters, even after Twitter automatically shortens them. The company declined to comment.

There is no question that followers on Instagram are like gold to a prospector. Whether you are new to Instagram or struggling for some time to break through; you need followers! How to split ownership with partner who will be absent for 2 years

A friend and I plan to start up a small business selling room and equipment reservation software to schools and businesses, beginning locally. To start, please know that we are both 18 years old and very new to the process of starting and running businesses. This will be our first business. We have decided upon an LLC to boot. Unfortunately, my friend will be leaving for a religious mission at the end of the summer, and will be unable to talk more than through about a couple emails per week for the span of two years. We have put equal effort and time into the software we have created, and will invest equal shares into starting up the business.

Our problem is in deciding how to split up the company, due to this absence. We considered starting off with a 50/50 split and gradually transferring ownership to myself as time goes on. In this way, should we make any profits, he will receive his fair share for how much work he has contributed in the beginning to creating the software and for being a founding member. We are unsure if this is the right way to go, and we have not worked out the details, such as the minimum ownership that he will end up with, how to deal with adding new partners over the span of those two years, etc.

If you were in this scenario, what would you do?

Thanks for any assistance, it's extremely appreciated.

Google launches Google Spaces

From the official Google Blog:
Quote:

Group sharing isn’t easy. From book clubs to house hunts to weekend trips and more, getting friends into the same app can be challenging. Sharing things typically involves hopping between apps to copy and paste links. Group conversations often don’t stay on topic, and things get lost in endless threads that you can’t easily get back to when you need them. We wanted to build a better group sharing experience, so we made a new app called Spaces that lets people get people together instantly to share around any topic. With Spaces, it’s simple to find and share articles, videos and images without leaving the app, since Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome come built in.

I have to admit I'm not seeing the big benefit or the differences between this and Hangouts, Collections, Groups, and G+ Pages but I guess I'll check it out.
The thing that really bothers me is that Google keeps lurching from one social/share idea to the next...never really committing or improving any of them, and then one day they can just abandon it.

Does anyone see any real benefit or usage ideas that come to mind with the new Google group, social, sharry thingy?

Second opinion

I learned the value of a second opinion years ago. My toilet bowl began not filling up all the way. I called my plumber and he could not come out for at least two days, so I called a nationally known plumber. They came out, he inspected it and said, "it's an old toilet, here is a quote for replacing it." So I think, okay I'll make this decision tomorrow. Then my plumber calls and says he had a cancel and can come by, I say okay. He inspects it and says "do you use a mint in the tank?" I said yes. He said a piece had broken off and clogged the part that allows water to fill the bowl. A $65.00 instead of a $700.00 expense.

Which brings me to "Professionals".
I have Hydrangeas and the leaves were very splotchy. I looked it up online and didn't get a clear answer. I took photos of the leaves and some leaves to a nursery and they said fungus, you can try this stuff but it usually doesn't work. So I do and it doesn't. I try a different nursery same diagnosis different fungicide. This year I was soaking my ferns in a five gallon bucket mixture of liquid fertilizer and water. I thought I might get better flowers if I poured the excess liquid on the Hydrangeas. Not only better flowers but completely cured. Not one splotch and I got triple the flowers than without. This also has me thinking about how doctors treat patients, or how we treat ourselves. In some instances if we ate healthier food and exercised regularly we wouldn't need as much blood pressure medication and antidepressants. I believe we complicate our lives with how smart we think we are.

Kickstarter and VC frauds/ aka "Living in reality"

There have been many threads here about using Kickstarter, and I will admit that I am constantly on the skeptical side and for good reason.

Here's a few Kickstarter projects that got a crap load of press, hype, and funding, only to turn out to be frauds or just straight out took the money.

The Peachy Printer
Quote:

The Peachy Printer had high hopes way back in 2013 when it first launched as a $100 3D printer that fits on your desk without breaking the bank. The project raised more than 600,000 Canadian dollars and promised to ship the gadget within several months. Now its co-founder is telling backers that more than CA$300,000 has been embezzled by a fellow partner, and is urging backers to contact the local police.

Hybra Advanced

When we last caught up with Hybra Advance Technology in July 2015, co-founder Joe Thiel told us the company’s legion of disgruntled Kickstarter backers, who forked over nearly $550,000 in 2013 to help Hybra develop wireless headphones called the Sound Band, would soon be made whole.

Not Kickstarter, but a start up defrauding venture capitolist just like any other ponzi scheme. Jonathan Mills

Former Motionloft CEO Jonathan Mills has pled guilty to two counts of wire fraud. The San Francisco entrepreneur, who raised funding from Mark Cuban, was arrested by the FBI in February. He admitted to spending "substantial amounts" of his victims' money on "vacations and other entertainment," like that time he hired Grammy-award winner Miguel (above) for a private show and numerous trips to Vegas.
http://ift.tt/1viCT3X

And then there's what's being called one of the largest VC/ Start up frauds ever.
Theranos
who raised at least $750 million from investors valuing the company at $9 billion in February 2014.

Basically they never had an actual product, or even a proven concept. They just raised a crap load of money promising that they did and then tried to hide the fraud while they desperately tried to actually invent what they said they already had
Quote:

"Theranos, a company that makes low-cost blood tests, has been celebrated as the inventor of the next major medical breakthrough, and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, has been hailed as the next Steve Jobs. But in an expose published today, The Wall Street Journal portrays Theranos as a company that is not only grossly under-delivering on its promise, but is also working hard to hide its problems.
http://ift.tt/1ZYYGuu

There are a ton of stories of Kickstarter and VC/Start Up fraud that go back to the early 90's. But you'd never hear them unless you frequented tech blogs and podcasts that talk about those issues. There's so much focus on the successes, which are actually exceptions, that we start to think that an idea is the finish line. That getting investment means that everything is going to be "A-OK. You've made it".

Reality is, the failure rate and rate of fraud and hucksters in tech and other kinds of funded start ups is the same as it's ever been in business. You still need to have your head on straight and actually deliver and run the company. Investment is debt. Debt that expects to be paid back.

So when I'm critical of Kickstarter ideas, it's because the odds of it working are so slim even if you have something completely brilliant, because the kind of people who contribute to kickstarters are weary of getting burned every time something that sounds good comes along. If you aren't thinking of how to combat that stigma, do some real marketing, and think you're just going to plop something up and people will magically throw money at you like it's 1999, you're kidding yourself.

Do you guys ever back Kickstarters? Ever been burned?
Do stories like these make you less likely to trust Kickstarters in the future?

Attorney & Lien ?

Hi there,

I am considering signing a so called attorney and fee agreement.
That agreement, has one point included, which may or may not be a standard procedure.

Attorney's Lien
The right of a lawyer to hold a client's property or money until payment has been made for legal aid and advice given. In general, a lien is a security interest used by a creditor to ensure payment by a debtor for money owed.

Question:
Is this a standard procedure ?

Writing stuff off

A friend of mine purchases items for their business (paper towels, toilet paper, cleansers etc...) and takes some the items home for personal use. I've never done this. I'm 80/20 on it - 70% says it's wrong and 30% says people do it so it's not so bad. I believe I was raised right, (to be honest, accountable, respectful... to be a gentleman) but being raised "right" seems almost wrong these days. What are y'alls thoughts? What is taking it too far when it comes to write offs? What are your thoughts to regularly taking home little things like TP?

The one time I remember feeling like I was taking advantage of the system was when I visited a customer, had a Ruth's Chris dinner, and had a $30.00 glass of wine.

Now that I think about this question, maybe people wouldn't want to answer on a public forum...

Possible workers comp fraud

Hi new here,
I run a couple restaurants and recently brought on a prep cook to cut meat for a trial period of one week. I told the employee we would give him a shot and see how he does. He works that Tuesday, he does ok, I tell him we don't need him Wednesday and to come Thursday. That Thursday he gets hurt at his other job. Some type of back injury. His full time job is evidently supposed to pay for his workers comp of his part time even though he only worked one day with us on a trial period? He wants me to put in writing that we were going to schedule shifts for him beyond the date of his injury, which was of no guarantee. He is suing workers comp or possibly his company for not paying his shifts at our place of employment. What I want to know is if I should report him to workers comp fraud, or if I should do nothing, or write a letter with the truth that all his shifts were discretionary and we never promised or finalized any shifts and it was made clear that his work was trial only. He was paid for his single shift and we have not scheduled him since.
Thank you for the helps guys. State is MN

Utilties payment

Hello,
Wondering which account/CC ought to be used to make utilities payment if only 45% of it is home office deductible ? We have both a business and a personal CC. Till date, only personal CC has been used to pay utilities. Perhaps, there's a better way to handle this ?

Website overhaul

How often do you think a website should be updated or overhauled? I know little changes and adding new products and tweaking copy and such will be ongoing, but how often do you think the whole thing should be torn down and remade? I've seen sites that have looked essentially the same for years, and I've seen sites that seem to change monthly. What is the ideal schedule for this sort of thing? I'd guess it depends on the industry and the company and the goal of the site, but I'm interested in hearing what the rest of you think.

What's your writing voice?

Writing theory says that, like your physical voice when you speak, everyone who writes has a distinctive writing voice. Maybe you use certain words more often, or you're a fan of run on sentences and commas. Maybe you like short, declarative sentences and use little description. Whatever your particular quirks, the theory is that the little quirks will give you away and identify the work as yours. Having these quirks can also be an issue if you're writing for a particular piece or market or reason and the writing needs to be in a style that conflicts with yours.

If you're aware of them, what are your writing quirks? For me, I know one of the biggest is that I like long sentences with lots of commas. One of the things I always do when I edit a first draft is to go back and change some of the longer sentences to shorter, more declarative sentences when it's warranted and doesn't interfere with the flow of the piece. What do you guys do when you write?

Marketing Fads

I think we all know that fads come and go. In marketing we've had the "send something tangible with your direct mail piece" fad, which was based on the idea that people would be less likely to throw your message away if it came accompanied by a promo item of some kind. Then there was the whole "put your brochure on something other than paper" fad, which led to a lot of brochures which were had to read. There's also been the QR code fad, where companies were putting QR codes everywhere, even places where it made no sense to have one.

What marketing fads do you think were the stupidest ones ever? Have you ever gotten caught up in a marketing fad?

Credit Cards or No Credit Cards

There are two pieces of advice I seem to see a lot when reading about starting a small business. One is to have savings that equal about a year to two years of income before you start your own business. The other is that savings may not be necessary, you can just use credit cards to carry you through until you start making money.

I'm curious, those of you who have businesses you own, how did you start? Did you have savings? Did you get a loan? Did you live on credit cards? From where did your initial funding come?

Great Podcast about Starting A Small Business

The 2RegularGuys podcast is primarily aimed at businesses that do decoration - screen print, embroidery, rhinestones, that kind of thing, but a lot of what they talk about is applicable to all types of businesses. Today's topic is things that current business owners wish someone had told them when they started their businesses. It starts at 11 a.m. EST. You can also listen to the podcast on iTunes. I've been on it a few times and I highly recommend it, whether your company does decoration or not.

Google I/O is next week and I'm excited

Google I/O, Google's developers conference is next week May 18–20, 2016. Each year it gets better and better as Google is really going all out with Virtual Reality, Project Fi mobile service, and are back to getting serious about hardware.
http://ift.tt/1L2R4ot

Rumors so far are rampant, but no one really knows until it starts.

2 things that I'm hoping for:

Rumors are that HTC is making the next line of Nexus phones. I'm personally hoping for a dual sim phone for Project Fi, but so far it's just a wish.
HTC said to be crafting two Nexus phones for 2016 - CNET

Another curious snippet that was announced yesterday is that Republic wireless will now start carrying Nexus Phones along with Samsung flagship phones (which support wifi calling) and that they may be also incorporating T-Mobile's network along with the Sprint Network (which they already run on). They also announced a new pricing plan that seems to mimic Project Fi's pricing.

Maybe I'm wearing my tin foil hat too tight, but it sure seems like Republic wireless and Google's Project Fi are getting pretty chummy.

What about you guys? Are you looking forward to anything? Don't care? Will you be watching the keynotes?

How do "Top 10" lists affect marketing?

Hi everyone!
If I didn't choose the right forum section - sorry!
I'm new here and I need an advice. I'm gathering people's opinions.

Right now there's a thought on my mind.
I'm starting my own e-shop, selling female clothes. And I'm trying to find new ways to attract audience.
I often see articles with "Top 10" lists and they put some goods on the top, and some goods on the bottom of those lists.

What if I start posting my own "Top 10" articles on my website about different types of textile for hot summer with links on my shop? Would you buy from me if I would give you this kind of information?
I will appreciate any opinion!
I didn't leave a link to my web-site so you couldn't call it advertisment, but if you are interested - I will post it :)

Hello from Caspodcast

I'm having a hard time starting my own business...

So I'm trying to start my own business and I'm having a real hard time figuring out what I need to do in order to be completely legal. (It's a small handyman business)

I've filed for my DBA (Doing Business As) and maybe I'll get something in the mail in a few weeks as a result? Outside of that, I don't really see any clear steps I need to take in order to be legal. Should I be hiring someone to help me through this process? I'm really at a loss right now.

I don't know how many of you have experience in this area, but if you have any tips or sources to help make this clear for me, I would appreciate it beyond belief. I think once I get the creation of the business down, I can start focusing on the fun stuff (ie marketing, growing etc)

We would like to invite members of small-business-forum.net, since it'd be a great opportunity to meet top lenders and investors like Angels Den, Seedrs, Enterprise Europe Network, SyndicateRoom, UK Business Angel Association, UKTI, London Stock Exchange and many other finance providers, who will be there to explain all available funding options and how to secure them.

Aiming to support a growth of Entrepreneurship and appreciating that startups have very tight budget, we can offer to small-business-forum.net members the same price as for our internal network (which is 1/3 of standard price). Here's your link: http://ift.tt/1WXFZbg

Thanks for your time and look forward to seeing you at the event!

Kind regards,
The BCE Team

Looking for ideas to start a business

I currently work as an engineer, and would like to have more freedom and increase my income. My goal is to eventually stop working for a company to work for myself. I'm pretty sure I can get some folks I know to join me if I have a good enough idea.

Current skill sets
Able to understand schematics
Developed hardware test systems, hw and sw
Can write C and working on improving C++ and I can use some other languages.
I have a math degree and some computer science classes under my belt.

Ideas
I have an idea for an exercise monitoring device
Get into software freelancing
Get into test system freelancing.

What are the best ways to get more information to see if they are viable options?

Cool business idea, but does it involve copyright infringement?

Hey everyone -

So I got an idea for a business. It would be to create T-shirts with quotes attributed to famous people that they never actually said. The quotes would be funny. It's really just a fun side-business. Not my main one.

So, a shirt would have a quote, and then the person's name.

Any copyright infringement there?

What if that included a picture?

Plus, this might include historical figures that are now long dead. Or it could also include contemporary figures like sports stars.

Can I use their names and pictures without legal permission?

Please show me how US copyright law does or does not apply in this situation. Thanks,

Dan

Meeting with a potential customer and need advice

I have a small IT company that I just started and I'm in need of new customers. My wife met a friend who knew the owner of a store/warehouse that sales to large companies (dollar stores etc). It's a medium size company (maybe 1 - 4 employees). Pretty much the guy (president) is not computer savvy and needs someone to run some of the IT side of things. My wife did some general discussion with him (I was not there), he wants to start someone on a trial basis (few months) to perform some website maintenance and to potentially get into selling much of his products on ebay as well as some facebook work. I will be meeting him tomorrow (for the first time). Here is the deal.

1. Website Maintenance: He mentioned he had someone there that he was paying for around $15.00/hr full time. My wife mentioned a monthly figure of around 3-400 a month initially. I know this may be a low figure (he even indicated), he said he's willing to pay more accordingly. However, since my company is new I'm more interested in establishing a good customer base. I'm not sure of the breath of the work he needs done, but from viewing his site it appears to be a lot of products where he will need price changes, image changes, updates on a weekly (maybe daily) basis. What is typically charged for this? Is there a general rate, I was reading 60 - 75 an hour? Also what type of documentation should I prepare for him to sign for this.

2. Ebay Store: He used to have a ebay store online, but due to mismanagement (previous employees), there was a problem and products didn't make it to customers, as a result the account was suspended!!! I've been with ebay for over 15 years buying/selling. I have experience with this, based on what my wife told him this is what I'm thinking (1) His english is not good, so description of products, title, images etc and communication with customer (2) Management of online store etc. (3) Communication of products being sold (to him) to set aside etc... My thinking, is I need to get his ebay account re-activated so that I would pretty much manage his store through his account. Should I just go ahead and use my ebay account, problem is if it's over 10K, then I will get a tax form. How is this whole area of business usually "priced out", If I were to sell for him, how much should I charge etc? What type of "documented agreement" needs to be made.

Getting paid in cash

My wife is looking for q job. She loves kids and has taken a bunch of qualification classes.

It's a minimum wage job. They pay only in cash, leaving anything to pay the IRS as well as forms up to her.

I've never heard of a company doing something like this. Is this legal?

Opening Floral Website and Retail Front

I need to make a website for my floral shop. It needs to be an eCommerce site so people can purchase items. I also want to get a POS store at the store.
I looked into Shopify. They have a package that costs $80 a month for retail POS and Online Site. I would need to buy the equipment of course. Not sure if this is the best route to go.
I also could build a website and put shopify cart on the webpage. I than use my Intuit quickbooks and everything communicates.. I can see sales from website and store in one location.

Does anyone have any experience with this. I am trying to make this easiest for my girlfriend. I am tech savy but she isnt.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Contacting a past customer

There is a company that used to purchase from me monthly and I haven't heard from them in about seven months. What are y'alls thoughts on me contacting them and asking why? Thanks.

Do you use Social Media to get customer service help?

I've found that I turn to Twitter more and more when I need assistance from a company. Generally I try what ever form or support email they offer, but if I don't get a response in 24 hours during the week, I go to Twitter and publicly call them out. 9 times out of 10 it works.

Mind you I don't just go on there ranting and raving, and I don't Tweet them from a profile where I do rant, rave, curse and so on.

I use my "business" profile and simply mention them and explain the issue. For most major companies the response is quick. Like minutes. And consequently I've gotten things taken care of quickly. I've even scored free stuff, credits, and so on.

Does anyone else use Social Media for customer service issues?

WhatsApp shut down for 72 hours in Brazil by judge

The international fight over users privacy and right to encryption vs. governments and law enforcement is really heating up now.

Quote:

A BRAZILIAN STATE JUDGE ordered mobile phone operators to block nationwide the extremely popular WhatsApp chat service for 72 hours, a move that will have widespread international reverberations for the increasingly contentious debate over encryption and online privacy.

WhatsApp is the most-used app in Brazil, a country of 200 million people (it is now owned by Facebook, the country’s second-most used app). An estimated 91 percent of Brazilian mobile users nationwide — more than 100 million individuals — use WhatsApp to communicate with one another for free (it has 900 million active daily users around the world).

This ruling comes from the same judge, Marcel Maia Montalvão, of a small town in Sergipe state, who two months ago ordered Facebook’s vice president for Latin America, Diego Dzodan, to be detained over WhatsApp’s failure to cooperate with a subpoena issued as part of a criminal investigation. The judge said the arrest was justified by Facebook’s “repeatedly failing to comply with judicial orders” in a drug-trafficking case. Pursuant to that order, Dzodan was arrested by federal police and held in custody for a full day, until an appellate court overturned the order.

Afterward, the Facebook executive insisted that “the way that information is encrypted from one cellphone to another, there is no information stored that could be handed over to authorities.” WhatsApp similarly said: “WhatsApp cannot provide information we do not have.”
It's been clear for a while that governments and politicians are completely oblivious to how encryption works, and don't understand most technologies. For that reason this is just going to get worse as they flail wildly trying to pass laws and make rulings that are impossible to comply with because they have no idea what they're talking about and most seem unwilling to simply ask the experts and actually learn.

Do cases like this make you want to encrypt and protect your info from law enforcement and the government even more so...even though you have nothing to hide?

Practical Tips for Beating Burnout

If you're in business, at times you will experience burn out. No matter how many business cliche's you try to live by such as, "Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life" and so on, reality is that some times you just get tired, your brain stops working, and there are days you wish you could just lay in bed binge watching Netflix.

For me generally keeping some kind of social life, hitting a Friday Happy Hour with friends, the occasional event like a show, a beer festival or concert, and keeping regular hours and weekends off helps keep me from zoning out due to burnout. Being interested in something other than work helps to. You have to have days where you do stuff that you want to do, not stuff that you have to do.

Read this article this morning where the author shares some tips for recognizing burnout and what do to so that it doesn't zap the life out of you.

Quote:

“Different people manifest burnout in different ways, but I think for all of us, it’s some variety of a shutdown,” she says. Parts of your personality start to contract. Your range of expression shrinks. Your world view narrows. “Burnout is deadly to startups because it kills perspective."

How to Structure High-Performing Teams

I am interested in starting a blog that helps businesses and managers structure the best teams for success. Would this be an interesting topic to anyone? It seems that once a business is up and running its tough to know who to hire, how to structure the most effective teams and how to best manage and motivate employees for productivity. Would you agree? Additional topics would include developing a company culture, how to empower employees, and developing alternative business structures outside of the traditional hierarchy...would this be helpful information for business owners? Are there other interests, pain points or topics you would find helpful? Thanks for the input!

How to start this business, I have no clue.

I have always wanted to create custom products and sell them to the consumers. However, I don't have any idea how to get started, who to talk to, and if I need a lot of people to achieve this goal. I don't know what products I want to make yet, but I am very determined about learning how to start one. What do I need to do to get started with this kind of a business? I have about 70k to work with right now and I have about 200k that I am unable to have at the moment.

Thanks,
Tim.
