Email Marketing in Canada? Be CASL compliant in 2014 or pay $1 per spam email

The new Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) will be enforced July 2014. The new law is aimed squarely at preventing the electronic abuse of email communication, and will give prosecutors a powerful legislative tool to fight rogue marketers who engage in this nefarious practice. The fines are stiff. Some writers I see are still confused over the exact details, and everyone is puzzled as to just how this anti-spam law will be enforced, and how it will change email marketing in Canada.
