Hello Everyone.

Hi folks. My name is Chris. I have a website called shipwithchris.com. I'm an agent for a family owned transportation company that is the largest reseller of complete transportion services in the United States. If I work hard enough I will be able to have ownership in the business. I hope to help others and learn more about running a business.

Restaurant/Bakery Specific Question

Hi, all.

Just wondering if those more experienced than me know if it's safe/energy efficient to put a fridge right next to a commercial oven?

I'm planning on having a pretty tight squeeze in my kitchen, and all my google-fu can find is anecdotal answers for residential models, which do say there's enough insulation to keep it from being a problem.

Still, it concerns me that my refrigerator might not be able to keep the food at safe temperatures, or that the electric bill will be prohibitively higher in my attempt to save space. Any thoughts?

Company Email Advice?

Hey all!

We are having problems with our sales people not responding to emails. We are looking for a way to be able to look at their emails to make sure things are answered. We currently use Network Solutions webmail.

Heres the problem though- everyone syncs their POP3 to either Gmail or desktop Outlook because we use InfusionSoft and desktop Outlook/Gmail have a plugin to sync to IS. We want to get away from Network Solutions too, we are not happy with the service.

Any advice? We need to be able to monitor inbound emails (outbound, if recorded correctly via sync, we can see)

The solution has to sync w InfusionSoft. We are a custom home builder, would a ticketing solution work for this?

Thanks so much!

How to determine the value of an entire industry

I need to get an approximate value for an industry located in the U.S., what it is worth annually, to present to potential investors.

I'm not sure what keywords to use to find companies that do this sort of work. Any help would be appreciated.

If anyone knows what to call this type of research or any sites that do this, that would be awesome.

Business Plan Help

Hi, there. I'm working on trying to write up a business plan.

I have my figures, my costs for equipment and overhead, my product costs and prices.

I even have a potential location picked out for the specific location-based parts and the traffic counts.

What I'm having trouble finding is a clear and concise description of how to organize all of that and my other thoughts into a palatable business plan.

I plan to use it to both seek financing from a local credit union and to guide me during the difficult parts of opening a business.

I'm opening a coffee shop with a heavy bakery element, in a residential part of Tallahassee, FL.

I know I'm new here, but I looked around and couldn't find what I was looking for as far as a formal guide. I think I've got all the major questions answered, I just need a structure.

Thanks!

Hello, everyone.

Hello! My name is Stephanie.

I'm in the business plan/planning stage of opening a coffee shop and bakery in Tallahassee, FL.

I hope we can learn a lot from each other.

How to safely digitally transmit credit card information

My small marketing business accepts credit cards, but we're having difficulty solving a problem regarding the best way to store the card numbers digitally.

We currently store them securely on paper, but we have remote employees who also need this information, and it's impractical for them to have to call us every time they need a credit card number. We'd like some way for them to be able to securely access the credit card number and use it. For example, our remote employees often need to use a client's credit card to sign them up for services we purchase for them on their behalf (for instance, Google Ad Remarketing, which we manage for them). Without the full credit card number, they can't do this -- so having the cards in a tokenization system doesn't work for us.

Not sure I even explained this well enough -- but -- any ideas? Email is obviously not a solution since that isn't secure at all.

Thanks!

income tax and social security tax questions please help

Hi, I have few questions and I hope somebody can help me. Me and my husband have small company incorporation and we are both independent contractors. He works for floor maintenance company and he is getting checks 2x a month. I'm working for myself - cleaning houses part time and going to school. Additionally to this I have few investments.

For tax purposes and planning retirement in the USA what would you recommend? Would it be better for my husband to have his checks written on his name or company name and the same for me? How to pay social security tax? we are planning to file jointly income tax. Does anybody knows how long do you need to work in USA in order to be eligible for retirement?

thank you

Is it a good thing to hire a finance consultant?

I am planning to start a new business in Toronto. I am pretty much aware of the technical aspects of what I plan to do. But as a newbie in business, I don’t know much about the business aspects like planning a strategy, finding and managing financial sources among other things. I want to take a business loan, but have a very less idea about what all to take care and is worried if banks may take advantage of my limited knowledge of these things. I have heard about certain companies like KPMG in Toronto who provides good advisory services on the matters of finance and business strategies. Should I contact them? Are they beneficial for my case?

Feedback On 1099 Remote-Office Sales Positions For Digital Services Business

Finally got around to at least launching this sales generating opportunity that I had been meaning to draft up for a year or so now. Essentially it's what I consider an excellent opportunity and even one that I myself would have loved to have came across years ago before I finally developed and grew my own digital services business.

I'd like to think I've created one of the most lucrative and fresh opportunities in my industry for individuals who love tech and want to make some extra money via website & digital services selling.

I have already had a handful of responses and at least one that's well qualified and already on board.

This offer is also available to businesses. I obviously need to draft up the "affiliate wording on a separate page and define the policy."

I'd appreciate any feedback and suggestions on this working affiliate model and of course anyone who's interested in the program as well. I spend the vast majority of my time working on site development and with existing clients. Like many small businesses, while I definitely need a sales force I can't realistically afford to on-board a seasoned sales rep. in a full or part-time capacity.

In a nutshell it's paying Sales Commissions ranging 30-45% of every sale; Websites, eCommerce sites, other digital services we offer. Thanks in advance for the feedback! Full Opportunity Details Can Be Viewed Here: Career Opportunities Digital Services

How do unknown scenarios impact your products and services?

Products and services involve talking to customers about problems, identifying opportunities, and quantifying the benefits. This is not simple, and benefit data often needs to be convincing—activity times, flow rates, up-times, etc—that generate more revenue or reduce costs for customers (especially, in B2B). One of the trickiest parts is determining the value that the market will place on a new development.

Market value often gets discounted until proven in the field, and it's not uncommon to see projections vary widely. Sometimes, forecasts might be too optimistic, while other times it’s just impossible to keep up. In either case, everything could fall apart when something changes or doesn’t go according to plan...

This might be connected to underlying assumptions and dependencies. Projections about oil prices, currency rates, consumer demand, labor rates and other basics will almost certainly fluctuate, especially in the long term. But, it’s easy to underestimate the impact of variability when developing products and services because people need to move fast.

Of course, I could be wrong—but trying to make better predictions probably won’t work, especially far into the future. How do unknown scenarios impact your products and services?

Help with market analysis/online sales videos

Hi all!

I am starting a business that will craft high-quality sales videos for business websites. They will be designed to help explain the companies product/service aswell as increasing the number of conversions and purchases online.

For this reason, I am currently looking to do some research to find out more about my target market – small to medium sized business owners who utilise the internet to sell their product/promote their brand.

If possible, I am looking to have a short chat with anyone that fits this criterion. With the aim of finding out their true needs and concerns in regards to selling on an online platform and adding to their online presence.

I understand that you are all are busy, thus this needn’t be long (15 minutes or so), but if you are interested in having a chat, please get in touch. Via phone or Skype is preferable, however if you would like to go for a coffee (I live in Manchester) that would also be great.

Contact me via PM - any help is massively appreciated!

Regards

Anuj Kotecha

NB: I am not looking to sell anything right now, although once my website is up and running I will want to get some real life testimonials and a generate a portfolio of my work, which I will be looking to do at a heavily discounted price from the normal rate.

Small Business Etiquette Coming From a MNC

Howdy folks,

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this question as it doesn't really fit on any of the boards, but I figured if there is management talk going on here it was a good place to start. So my apologies if this thread is in the wrong channel -- sometimes people can really get edgy about this in forums haha :)

Anyway, I work/live in the Silicon Valley which is tech start-up central. And obviously the hub of all the main tech companies too. Anyway, I used to work for two very large companies in the area (we've all heard and love them hehe) and I started a new position at a tech start-up. I've never worked in a small business like this.

I'm in a position where I am doing a lot of technical assistance directly with customers. So I see a lot of what people are experiencing, complaining about, requesting and just general ideas from the public. Finding bugs and reading this stuff is sort of helping develop the product and make it better.

So here is my question. I've sort of written up a report, after working with this information for about a month, of ideas and areas of opportunity. But I don't want to be "that guy" who jumps in, barely working there a month, and thinks he has all the answers, and wants to change all this stuff. I don't want to make it seem like my ideas are better then theirs or insult the founders. I mean this is their baby, they've put a lot into this (I work on a team of around 20, maybe less). I'm not used to working in an environment where people are connected to the end-sum quite like that. Like if you're developing a product at an MNC, you have substantial job security and it's not quite that personal. That's not to say they don't take pride in their work, but they didn't give their own money to build the product either.

The feedback I want to give them comes from a purely positive place, I'm just excited about different things and, frankly, I want them to be impressed with me; to show that I have initiative and am good at my job. To those who are bosses and have received your own feedback, how would you recommend I act so that I am handling this with tact, respect, and charm? My thought was to create a thoughtful presentation. Make a graph, show my numbers. My logic was if I took the feedback seriously and presented seriously that shows I actually thought about it, it would be received professionally and seriously thought about.

I have a lot of job experience, I mean obviously they hired me with my resume and actually called my references. And I work directly with customers so I would like to think I have some credibility.

Thanks so much for reading through that essay. It was rather verbose :)

Courses on Small Business Management?

I'm investigating if there is a need for Small Business Management course specifically aimed at tradespeople? (electricians etc) We're a training company that focusses on engineering/technical courses and we've been investigating the potential design of an accredited diploma of management specifically aimed at tradespeople looking to start their own businesses. I won't name the company as I'm not looking to advertise here at all, I simply want to hear from people in this situation wether a formal course which is nationally accredited in Australia would be useful? We're thinking of including items such as creating business plans, basic marketing, managing finances, managing tax etc. Any feedback would be much appreciated!:)

Liquor.....new participant

1st time to this site. Yowzer.....took awhile just to get this far.. Looking to open a liquor store and seeking advice.

Should I be keeping copies of received checks?

I've been taking an accounting class to assist me with running my business. The teacher has said that I should be getting the checks I deposit back from the back, cancelled obviously, so I can keep them as evidence towards my accounting records.

Is this actually something put into practice? I'm not sure how to organize all the checks. Most of my records are on my computer but if I were to print every invoice and attach it to its check, I'd need to make a bit more space for the extra filing cabinets. It would cramp me in my office quite a bit so I don't want to do this unless it's absolutely necessary.

Cold Weather

I don't know how you cold weather folks do it. I haven't seen snow since 1990. Went to a conference in Atlantic City for a seminar for a few days. 35 degrees, spitting rain windy, a little snow on the ground.

That blast of cold wind just about killed me. Granted that the hot July Florida days would probably kill some of you northerners :)

Never having been to Atlantic City I was expecting a small Vegas. It really seemed to be a place going downhill.

HI from Dubai

Hi this is Jan from Dubai, Joined this forum to share ideas and to discuss different marketing trends

Why is Michigan all over my lead form?

In google analytics I am getting a spike on Michigan. Michigan showing too much traffic to plot so google takes the easy road and plots it as a giant circle on the graphic instead of showing the cities, and just list them on the report textually.Michigan isnt the top hit tho. when i group by state, the usual majors beat it out cali, texas, newyork, fla, ect. I see the increased traffic in Michigan and it is welcomed... but here is the rub.for the last four or five days.ALL of my leads. that is.converted hits that have filled out the form to request info.have all been from Michigan.ALL.I'm talking 15 plus straight leads.WHY? speculate.I want your general Ideas as well as any analytics reports or things i should look at that I already havent...

regarding analytics I have grouped by keywords... they are different...there isnt a new outlyer there...other than the usual "how to open a game store" esque stuff... I have checked referals to see if a new site picked me up that is geographic in nature to michigan like a classified site or something... I dont see anything speaking directly to Michigan. and finally... I call my leads... So far I have gotten some of these on the phone... they say they stumbled onto me from google.

Why? Why the aparent spike towrds conversion in MI? Is it really just a coincidence? I feel the reason might help me in other regions...thats just how I think... Thoughts? I hope you guys will give me some ideas...

Looking for Business Partners

Hi guys. I have a local tour business in New York City that doesn't really function because we did a lot of work with our website and marketing campaigns before our official launch (which was in January, but still we are moving too slow). My main partner seems inactive and not interested in pushing this business and making good money with me, so I'm looking to rebuild my team form the ground with someone who likes travel and/or have hospitality experience as well as some marketing(digital marketing would be perfect)/HR/business development background.

Ideally I'm looking for 2-3 people who can help me. The ideal candidate will be from NY, NJ or CT, but its also possible if you live in any other state.

Right now we offer only 3 services: airport concierge, personal tour guide and online shopping/courier delivery for tourists. 2 services are pretty unique and no one else offers something similar to this.

A few facts about the business:

- Registered as domestic LLC (NY State) in July 2014

- Has a business checking account

- Has all social media accounts and 95% finished website

I'm also seeking for a $20,000 debt to pay salaries and cover ongoing expenses for first 3 months (before we break-even which will be in 4 months) and repay it within 1-1.5 year (I want to borrow $20k and pay $60k back). Later this summer I'm also planning to raise additional $450,000-600,000 to buy 6-8 double deck buses and offer bus tours. So I need someone who can help me to raise this money and reach our milestones.

If you know someone who is passionate about tourism and/or has business experience in similar industries and will be willing to be a business partner - please let me know.

Any questions - I'm always here.

Thank you very much.

Due Diligence with Manufacturers in China

Hi All,

I am trying to get a novelty product manufactured as inexpensively as possible, and therefore I have decided that manufacturing in China is probably my best bet. The novelty item is a dancing "doll" very much like a singing/dancing Santa Claus doll that you have probably all seen during the holidays.

I have made a non-mechanical prototype so it is very clear what the outside of the doll should look like. For the internal components, I need a dancing module along with a recordable voice module. These are readily found on Alibaba and Globalsources.com. I have found companies on these websites that supply the modules AND provide OEM services.

My question is: has anyone gone through the due diligence process with any Chinese manufacturers? I am not able to travel to China to check on the factory. Therefore I am looking for ideas to do the following from the states: make sure the company exists; make sure the company delivers what it says it will deliver; make sure the company has sufficient quality control processes, etc.

I would love to have my product produced in the U.S., but at this time it's simply too expensive. I would love any advice from anyone just starting out who has dealt with companies on Alibaba or Globalsources.

Thank you!

Linda

Have a potential breakthrough technology-but a few questions.

Hi everyone,

I have found a way to significantly reduce capital and operational costs for brick and mortar stores that sell consumables, while improving convenience and multiplying sales/sq ft by many times, hypothetically. I have had positive feedback from several business professors, the idea appears to be sound. It relies on using a technology that has not been used on the scale which I envision, although the technology and such works fine. There are a few questions I have:

-I need a company to be able to make what I envision. It is doable, but it needs development, and I don't know which companies would be willing to do the R&D for a startup. I wanted it to be a partnership where they can have more future profit in exchange for lower startup costs for that one store (like them being a franchisee). How do I get someone to get interested in making it?

-I have trouble finding a way to patent it, as changing the way it is used may not have any differences in terms of a patent. (It would be more complex than what is on the current market, so if that complexity can be captured, then it could be patented) I would need a partnership with an entity that creates this technology; however, they may choose to use the idea themselves without me once they know how it is done. This may not be the case, as business requires many skillsets, some of which they may not have, which could be provided by me (but then, they may go to a more seasoned professional, or anyone else for that matter. But I don't think so, as they would just be a manufacturer) Should I get them to sign a NDA?

-In addition, other retailers may imitate the idea as well later. This may be a worse threat, as they have the resources to scale and grow much faster in outlets (although, franchising may alleviate this issue somewhat). I think this is inevitable, and then the market comes into play. What can I do about it, other than a patent? I think just doing a good job.

-Any tips on getting others to join my team? Can't have a one man show. I know the types of skills needed to add in the team, like someone who knows operations management. I just need to know how to find those people. I heard that 'expanding your network' is a big thing for entrepreneurs, but there are other ways (although putting a craigslist ad probably isn't the way to go.)

Hai thar! I'm an inventor.

Hello. Ever since I was a kid, I loved making up new ideas, which is why I chose to major in Business Entrepreneurship, almost graduated. My family has a history of making their own small businesses, all of the uncles own their own businesses, as does my father (who patented a stability system for cars, nothing has come out of it so far :( ). I'm currently trying to make a brick and mortar store that has extremely low costs, which appears to be feasible so far. (Wal-mart, I'll bankrupt you! :p) But this is a new experience for me, so I look forward to everyone's input. I hope to learn from others' experiences and advice, and hope I can bring my knowledge to help other people out as well.

New to forum and business!

Hello from Rocket City (Huntsville, Alabama)!

I just joined this forum today, and I recently started my business merely weeks ago. I'm a candle maker! :D Seriously though, it's so much more fun than I thought and who doesn't love making what they love, right? I'm still working on the start up part: logo design, business cards, taxes, taxes, taxes...that part really scares me, which is why i'm here- to learn as much as I can about businesses and how to grow my business. Maybe one day i'll be the next Yankee Candle company :)

Can supplier dictate my marketing strategy?

So I place orders for a television service company, I am an authorized retailer, and in my contract it dictates that we are not allowed to "cold call." Aside from how people feel about cold calling, when following local, state, and federal laws it is a legal and good advertising tactic; so my question is, is it legal for the company to dictate my private marketing strategy. They seem to have many rules relating to how I conduct my business.

Syndicated Data Sources

Are there syndicated data sources for small businesses? I've use IRI and Nielsen in the past while working in a corporate role, but I assume IRI and Nielsen would be too spendy for the average small business owner. What other data sources do some of you use to analyze your business? Thank you to all for your help! KB

Lack of Sales - Marketing Advice Apreciated

Hi all, like many of you I've taken the leap and started my own e-commerce business, however after almost 3 months I've had almost no sales!...

I am marketing like hell, with google shopping, bing ads, facebook ads and I'm active for several hours a day on Facebook/Twitter/Polyvore/Pinterest/Instagram etc. which generates approx 100 visitors a day. My stock is similar to what's being sold on other sites and my prices are competitive or cheaper in a lot of cases, but still no sales???

Analytics tell me visitors are browsing my site and bounce rate is below 10%. I understand that e-commerce is progressive, but that implies progression, I'm seeing none!

The only thing I can assume is my website layout/design is stopping conversions? I've had the functionality checked so I know the sales process work ok, so now I'm at a complete loss.

Therefore would some of you be kind enough to have a look at my website at labellalondon.com and tell me what you think and PLEASE BE HONEST!

Any help or advice would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Aleisha

Is direct mail marketing still relevant

Hello everyone, I own a small boutique and we are hosting a special sale next month. We already do online marketing but this time I am also planning to do something different like mail marketing or flyer distribution. I am already in talks with a direct mail company and have been looking into the type of pamphlets and flyers they have done and it seems really good. I think a colourful and vibrant flyer would definitely catch attention. What are your opinions regarding this? Should I go forward with this? Is there any other ideas that I could use for promotion?

Getting just business insurance or opening own company?

Hi all,

My wife lost her job about 3 months ago and about 1 month already she's working for someone cleaning houses.

All of the supply/clients are provided by that owner of the business. Already 2 clients offered on their own to pay her directly instead of other person getting their cut.

Just today owner asked her to get Business Insurance (for about $30/month).

Would now be a good time and register own company and get Business Insurance or just get that and continue?

She has lot of experience in cleaning as she use to do that long time ago.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated since we don't have any experience in running a business.

Most likely she will never have her own employees if that matters.

I can make website/business cards if there's a benefit in opening own company.

Thank again in advance!

How do bad projections impact your small business?

Hi everyone,

Just joined the forum—hope you're all doing really well. Wanted to reach out today to hear your feedback, experiences, stories and get a lively discussion going!

Over the years I've seen outcomes deviate from expectations in both large and small companies. In some cases, the expectation was based on way too optimistic assumptions—demand lower than predicted, technology performance just didn't cut it, or funding didn't come through. Other times we simply underestimated, and missed opportunities that we weren't prepared to handle (my personal nightmare)...

I'm trying to learn more about these types of experiences across your different types of small businesses in different industries.

Overall, I feel that we struggle to grasp how variability and dependencies might impact our particular situation. Forecasts, validations, simulations, and other types of projections (for example, in business plans) almost certainly have error, often disguised in a cell in an Excel spreadsheet. People might consider possible outcomes, but they need to move fast. After-the-fact, the actual outcomes are often very different than expected, and everything falls apart when something changes. For example, recently we've seen how oil price, currency, and all kinds of basic fluctuations throw everything out of whack.

Of course, your experience might be completely different and I could be way off track. Or, talking about specifics here in the forum might not be right for you—that's totally fine. If that's the case, then I sincerely apologize for wasting your time today. I’m also NOT trying to suggest that we can necessarily become better clairvoyants or improve our ability to predict the future—obviously that is nonsense!

Otherwise I'd love to hear your story in the comments about how uncertainties impact your small business results (nothing proprietary, of course). What are some of the challenges you have faced?

Can I sell a software from the company I founded to the company I am employed at?

online store selling imported textiles?

Greetings. I am taking a hard look at what it would take to import some very specific textiles and resell them on an online store. I believe there is a niche that needs filling but it will come down to whole sale cost. I have found some possible sources from internet searches but am new to this idea. Currently I have snagged an appropriate domain name and am working on a written business plan. I also have a call in to a local SBA office to also get some help. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The errand service business

Greetings! I've just joined the forum because I am about to enter the business world and I have little of my own operational knowledge.

I have decided to open a Errand service with money from my tax returns. I am going to need advertising, insurance and I assume some unknown costs.

From what I've seen no one in my area provides these services outside of possibly home health aids and some seniors groups. However I would like seniors to be part of my target market.

I am wondering what type of insurance I will need?

My service will offer a range of abilities from deliveries, tending homes, waiting on utility workers, letting contractors into your home, pick up and drop off dry cleaning ,etc.

Is getting bonded a good idea? Do I legally need a tax number or can I pay with just my social security number as I will be the only employee to begin with?

After a 3 years i would like to have a big enough market to employ a couple workers and potentially franchise in 15 or 20 years.

What do I need to learn?

Hello from the beautiful NC mountains!

New here and wanted to introduce myself. I am a father of four and happily married. We have a blended family and my children range from 19 years old to 1 month old. I know! The latest was a beautiful and unexpected surprise, but I have no regrets at 42 myself. Anyway, I work for a fairly large site development company/heavy civil construction as a foreman. I am on the road all the time with a chance to go home for the weekend about every 2nd week. Not a way to raise a family... what's that old country song? "Pretty good living' but it ain't no life" So looking for ideas to get something going that I can do and be home every night.

Back before the housing crash, I had a successful lawn care/landscaping/earthwork business. My wife (at the time) now ex-wife panicked and wouldn't stop nagging until I sold out. I think now, looking back that I could have ridden it out and been in a strong position today, but I digress. I am pretty multi-faceted with my abilities as I started in school working the construction trades and heavy construction, but decided to go to work in a factory thinking it would give me more predictable work schedules, etc. So after about 12 years of that (and doing pretty good working my way up the ladder there, leaving as middle management in a production factory) I got back into heavy construction, including my time as a business owner as I mentioned before.

We have a unique situation here in our county's population as we are a haven for snow-birds. In other words every summer the population here probably more than doubles since many of the homes here are second homes owned by folks who live mainly in FL, but there are people from all up and down the east cost who have 2nd homes here. We also have a new casino opening this year (2015) that will draw more tourists, etc here. From the southern approach, we are on the route for people driving to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

I'm tentatively thinking about a couple of ideas to get me started as I don't have the liquid capital to get straight back into the grading business as I would like to, but thinking about something service oriented such as garbage pick-up service and maybe driveway repair (we have a lot of mountain driveways that are just dirt and gravel roads that wash when it rains).

I look forward to your advice and conversation!

Paying a foreign company against their invoice?

Hi. If a US based company wants to pay money to a foreign company for their services, can the US company transfer money (against the foreign company invoice) to an individual's local bank account in USA ? (Individual from foreign company, currently not residing in USA, but in foreign country) Are there are any taxes to be paid by the foreign company for getting funds to a local bank ?

Partner Investor Percentages

I am looking at starting a small business with a friend. He will be securing the business loan of $100,000, and I will be doing ALL of the work (planning, product design, marketing, mgmnt, etc.) I will be leaving my current full time position and will be working on this business full time, and therefore will be taking a salary to replace my current income, and allow me to focus full time on the startup. My partner will not be investing any time or efforts.

I am unsure as how to calculate financial return, as I will also technically be an employee / partner.

My friend is suggesting a 90/10 split (in his favor) since he will be risking the funds and I will be drawing a salary. Problem is that with any success at all, these %'s are greatly indifferent. (i.e. $10,000 profit = $9,000/$1,000 and $20,000 profit = $18,000 / $2,000)

Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks...

Creating a Portal for retailers to place orders

Hi everyone,

My company sells its own products and is currently all e-commerce, but we're going to start getting into retail.

My question - Are there any good solutions for creating a portal that retailers can access to place orders at a wholesale price? I'd like to be able to just add a link to it from the footer of our main website and just host it on something like http://ift.tt/155pZxj

We're using Quickbooks to handle invoicing and placing retail orders. Currently we just handle the few orders we've been getting through email exchange.

Hope that's not too vague, just learning this traditional retail game and trying to get all our ducks in a row.

Thank you!

Buzz Words we can stop using in 2015

There are many, but I get tired of hearing people say that they are "Passionate" about their business or their job. EVERYONE out there claims to have all this passion. That they live, eat and breath Social Media...or whatever it is. It's not special when everyone is saying it. Now it just sounds like a con from a group of traveling grifters.

Web Designers, SEO's, and Marketers are the biggest offenders, although I did see a wedding planner say it on her website the other day.

Every time I hear someone say they are "passionate" about their job I imagine this:

What are some others that you're tired of hearing?

Retageting - Perfect Audeine vs AdRoll

Hey everyone,

In the process of experimenting with retargeting on specific campaigns. Wondering if anyone has experience with either Perfect Audience and/or AdRoll. Disclaimer - I am new to retargeting... so from my point of view, both seem adequate to get started.

Would love to hear of any preferences and/or experiences that I/we can benefit from.

SURVEY: How are you using Social Media for your Business?

I'm always looking at surveys and research for all kinds of things to try and get more insight into my target market.

My problem is that most times that data is old. Even 6 months is pretty old data in this day and age.

Or I don't know what the sample size is or who they are actually asking.

Then if you want further details you have to pay for this 6 month or year old information that you have no idea how they complied.

I just never feel like they are very accurate or useful to determine any behavior of my demographic.

So I decided to just ask the people I want to hear from and created my own survey intended for Small Business Owners just like me, to see how they/we are actually using Social Media and consuming information.

I'd appreciate it if you guys would share your insights:

2015 Social Media Survey for Small Business Owners

Easy peasy.

Thanks in advance.

I am working with a small company that sells technology via Amazon. We want to learn more about how customers are using the product and would like them to give us direct feedback through phone call. How do I approach small businesses effectively?

Hello,

This past year I’ve realized I have a passion for creating automation tools to help businesses. I’ve gained a considerable array of skills that allow me to quickly look at inefficiencies in a company’s (computer) workflow, and identify areas that can be automated so to save the company/employee considerable time and money over the long-run. For instance, I helped a small (but very successful) real estate company automate their process of adding new listings to their website. It used to take them 1+ hour, but I got it down to around 7 minutes, at the click of a button.

I truly believe there are tons of small (and large) businesses that are wasting precious time/money doing tedious, repetitive tasks that should be automated instead.

My question:

What would be the most effective way to approach businesses to offer my skills? Should I simply approach the manager of the business with a portfolio of services I can offer?

In my mind, I’ll have to do this:

1) Get a business number

2) Create and sign “non-disclosure” agreements that will bind me to confidentiality in case businesses show me “sensitive” data in the course of teaching me their inefficiencies.

3) Go from business to business offering a free one-hour consultation where we sit down together to identify potential areas that could be automated.

4) I propose a cost to implement the solution

5) They accept/reject

6) I complete the project, and get paid, adding them to my portfolio.

I suspect I’ll need legal help to construct non-disclosure agreements and the such, but I’m asking for advice of any sort as to how I can make this idea come to life. Is there an effective way of integrating my services into a company?

Please offer any advice or criticism that comes to mind.

Thank you!

Web business

After you lock in financing, what is the next step for your business? Many say that a lot of industries are seeing e-commerce as a new means of revenue, if not a main source. Im looking for people who have made a web site and seen dramatic increases in revenue, upwards of 40%+ of that revenue being generated through their website. What are these industries that have 40%+ online? Thanks!

Small Business Owners Social Media Challenge

We've had many mobile vs. desktop/laptop discussions around here. I read the stats and full well know how much people use mobile devices.

But most survey results don't focus on the specifics that I want answered from the people I want the answers from.

So I made my own survey. It's easy, quick, to the point and you don't have to give any personal or contact information to participate.

I just want to compare the info.

Suggestions for what to import and distribute locally

Hello, I am new to this forum, and forums in general. I'm not sure if this is the right section, please let me know if it isn't.

I was wondering if anyone on this forums was involved in an importing business. I am trying to start one for myself, but cannot seem to find the right product. The only thing that has appealed to me was cell-phone case, because of the high demand and repeat business. On the other hand there is also A LOT of competition, whether its online (ebay, etc) or local (stalls/stores). Also I am not in the position to open up a store, the most i could do is open up a website to set up sales. I would love to sell online but the shipping cost in my region is too high in my opinion.

So what I looking for is a list of items/products that you may be importing and selling locally, or what you think might be good to sell.

Mostly I will be trying to sell via Kijiji, Facebook, etc. (locally)

Thank you~

Hi All,

I am a small business owner. We do IT consulting and bill our customer at the end of the month. Typically we get paid 30 days post issue of invoice. My question relates to claiming of income in a calendar year. So for e.g. if we bill our customer for Dec project work on 1st of Jan (next year) and get paid 1st week of Feb do we claim the income billed in Jan for Dec work in the previous year earnings or the new year income? Our financial accounting year for bookkeeping is Jan - Dec.

Just Getting Started Questions

Hello, I hope to be able to gain some insight on this forum.

I have already begun the researching process on how to start a small business and I have many questions running through my head.

First and foremost, I want to make sure that I start off on the right foot and follow all necessary rules!

I have composed a list of questions that I hope can be answered (or if you could at least point me in the right direction), but first, here are the specifics about my business:

* Location: Florida/out of my home/via the web & to eventually travel to events

* Products: home goods, gifts, accessories (homemade & wholesale)

My Questions

- What is a Certified Copy of fictitious name registration and a Certificate of Status of fictitious name registration? Are they both necessary to have for your business?

- What does registering your fictitious name protect?

- What if someone registers a trademark identical to my fictitious name? What are the consequences?

- The State of Florida requires that once a fictitious name has been registered it must be advertised in a newspaper at least once. Why do I have to do this? What if I don't have anything to advertise yet? What is the time frame?

- What is the standard procedure for registering your fictitious name if you would like to list multiple locations other than your county? Are there additional fees? Additional forms? Etc? Again, I would like to be able to legally travel to other counties within the state to sell my products.

- What is the difference between an FEI number and EIN number? Do I need both?

- What about a tax identification number?

I know that I'll have more questions to come.

Thank you for your time.

Google Domains is a real thing now

I knew that Google was a licensed domain registrar and has been for a couple of years now, but I always wondered why and like others speculated that they were using registration info in search algorithms. Now we know what they've been planning and it has launched

Quote:

Google has launched a public beta of its Google Domains service in the US. It primarily focuses on offering businesses a way to claim their website domain name as well as web page creation features.

  • Improved search and suggestion experience to help you find the perfect domain name

  • Over 60 new domain endings like .company, .florist and .coffee

  • A simple dashboard to manage your domain, website and email settings

  • The integration of Blogger so you can create a blog and easily connect it to your domain

  • The ability to quickly browse website template themes and compare the plans and features of our website building providers

  • Dynamic DNS so you can setup your domain and keep it pointing to the same computer even when the IP address changes.

Successful services company... but stuck. Next step?

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for awhile and finally have decided to join in on the conversations...nice to meet you!

I'm kind of in a pickle in terms of growing my company, and would love some advice..

My business partner and I own a digital marketing agency that specializes in a large industry (one that will always be booming). While we serve clients locally, we do have a global reach, servicing several clients in EU due to being internet-based. We have been a company for 3.5 years now. We have no overhead and generated $185,000 last year but now feel like we are stuck and not sure how to grow beyond that. We have a handful of clients, some small, and 1 very large name on our roster. Lately nothing seems to be doing the trick for us -- we've tried social media, SEO, emails etc. to land new business, you name it.

The real problem is -- we just don't have time for sales and don't have the skill set.

It is just the 2 of us and we wear all hats. As you all know, it's very time consuming and we feel that we do not spend enough time on lead generation. Just not enough time in the day! And to be honest.. we're just not that great at it. We're great at DOING the work, but hate the legwork of landing a client.

Is the next step to hire a sales rep with the goal of generating enough revenue to start expanding our team? To be honest, we make just enough right now to pay ourselves. Therefore, hiring someone full time would not be feasible for us. Would a lead generation company be a smarter choice, perhaps a part time consultant who puts in a few hours a week, commission etc? I fear maybe it's too early for us to start thinking about this because of lack of funds (though we can definitely put some $ aside for this), but at the same time, if we don't get help in this department, I don't know how we're going to grow. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Question about EIN filing

Hi everyone, sorry for another beginner question, but I searched online and found conflicting answers.

I just filed for and received my EIN online, and for my business name I simply put my business name but did not include LLC after it. (I am filing as a single-member LLC)

Is this alright, or is it an error that should be corrected? If I need to correct it to say "Business Name, LLC" should I contact the IRS to change it or should I apply for a separate EIN with the correct wording?

Thanks in advance!

Private Shop Sales Category Creation Problem in PrestaShop

I want to create a private category on my PrestaShop (PS) store such that only subscribed customers will buy products from that category. However, new visitors can see the sales from there. The customers who subscribe the private category get a private sales area in their account and all their records will save there. Also, I want to show subscribe buttons to non logged-in users. Any idea about it. Any help will be appreciated

What is the future of small business advertisement?

This thread is aimed at business that hold events and entertainment

The traditional way for small local businesses to advertise to customers is to use flyers, posters and PR staff. But have these methods become obsolete? From experience, businesses such as bars, clubs, and entertainment venues have moved away from these methods and now solely rely on advertising through social media.

Is this the most effective way to advertise now? What do you find the most effective way to reach customers? Is the mobile phone in everyone's pocket making PR for business like these unnecessary because customers can find what they're looking for in a matter of seconds? Can small businesses effectively advertise online? Or is their message drowned in the sea of social media and giant advertisers

Please discus what you believe the future of advertising is for these business who rely on local customers

The future of getting customers

The future of getting customers...

This post is aimed at businesses who advertise to local customers. For example bars, clubs, music venues, etc.

Are flyers, posters and PR staff becoming obsolete? Now more than ever bars, clubs and venues are using Facebook and other social media sites to promote their business. Has the way we advertise evolved? Is this going to be the future of how our “small” business attract customers? And do you think advancement of technology and increased smartphone use - where information is in the pocket of everyone - will aid marketing to local customers or will the "little guy" be drowned out in the sea of social media and giant advertisers?

I have a small business that is trying to tackle this problem. I wont mention the name because I don't wont this post to be named as advertising but please if you have to time fill out the survey below. I am collating data on this matter to help small business owners stand out in an advertising market saturated by giants.

http://ift.tt/14naT4L - copy & paste into browser (when you're taking part think as yourself as a customers not a business owner)

I put it to the members of this forum to discus their most effective way to get patrons/customers in the door and what will be the future of connecting to local and visiting customers.

Thanks, Calthomson

Small Business Owners Web Survey

We've had many mobile vs. desktop/laptop discussions around here. I read the stats and full well know how much people use mobile devices.

But most survey results don't focus on the specifics that I want answered from the people I want the answers from.

So I made my own survey. It's easy, quick, to the point and you don't have to give any personal or contact information to participate.

I just want to compare the info.

If you get a second,

Your Opinion Matters - Small Business Owners Web Survey

Right now I'm the only one who's filled it out so until a few people do it the only numbers you'll see are mine.

Thanks

Questions about setting up a new business...

I want to present my idea and how I would like to set it up for simplicity, but also make sure I am not missing something. I appreciate any feedback.

I am starting a pawn business at one location. This is more or less an upscale pawn business, to an extent. We will basically deal in guns, jewelry and newer electronics (clean looking items, not junk). We will sell new guns and ammo... and we will have a separate dedicated home theater demo room where we will have new audio equipment for sale, although most of it will be on a special order basis. Of course we will buy gold and jewelry and a few other items, and sell the same. We will also do check cashing and a few other minor things, but all will basically fall up under the pawn shop business.

For marketing purposes I want to have specific names for the primary segments. For example... on my sign out front it will have three business names:

XYZ Firearms

Guns / Ammo / Self Defense

-----------------------------------------

XYZ Audio Video

Home Theater Showroom

-----------------------------------------

XYZ Pawn

Not Your Average Pawn Shop

Something to that effect anyway.

This way I can have a website for XYZ Firearms and mainly focus on SEO for guns... as well as deal with the various gun broker sites with that name... and not the XYZ Pawn shop name.

Same thing for the audio video business. I can setup a website for XYZ Audio Video and advertise AV products. Post listings for equipment on various audio classified sites and not have to show that it is coming from a pawn shop. When I deal with audio distributors, I am using my audio name, not a pawn shop name, which some might frown on, since the pawn business sometimes gets a bad rep. Think shows like hardcore pawn... think going to so many pawn shops and seeing junk all over the place. This won't be the case with us, but getting past that mentality is a challenge.

So all this is done in one building, yet all dba's share the same tax ID number under a single holding company. All the sales tax is paid under one name, the holding company. Hopefully I can get one business license, and one insurance policy to cover the holding company and the dba businesses.

*** The bank account is under one name... funds for all sales go into the same cash register and are deposited in the same bank account. I can't see getting three bank accounts and having to keep up with three cash registers, three sets of books... just doesn't make sense, not since it is all somewhat related. The pawn business sells new and used guns, new and used audio equipment. The basic premise is to highlight some of the segments and take advantage of their market niche to get folks in the shop and have better separation for Internet marketing.

Seem reasonable... am I missing anything significant in my thinking?

Thanks!

Marketing greeting cards

Hello,

I am new to this forum, well all forums really. I have done very little "foruming" on the net.

I want to start a new business. I write and I do some graphic design, and I want to start a greeting card company. I have a Ricoh Aficio SP C831 which prints heavy card stock. I have hundreds of verses already written. My question is: Do I need to design my own graphics, or are the royalty free graphics that I buy useable on my cards?

I want to offer both personalized and regular greeting cards. I would like to offer the audio but I know that is out of the question.

Can anyone tell me how one would get started. I already have my title and have been paying state franchise taxes on it since 2009, but I have not made any money yet.

I do believe they will sell because I sold them one Christmas season for just three weeks and made almost $26,000 in that time. I just do not know the best way to try and get them marketed.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am going to college this year for graphic design, but I am wondering if I should take marketing instead. I need both!!

I am disabled and will do most of my marketing on the internet. Can anyone tell me how easy it would be to obtain a loan to help me get started. I already have a good computer and printer, however, I will need m ore equipment than that and I will need to borrow enough to pay someone to help me market them I guess.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.
